New faces:

Roger Bertsch has joined Merrill Lynch as a financial consultant. Bertsch, who retired from the Navy in 1993 after serving 24 years, previously worked for Edward Jones in Spokane.

Eric Nelson was appointed to the JacklinGolf team, a division of Jacklin Seed. Nelson’s duties include providing support to Jacklin Seed distributors in the United States and assisting in the development of JacklinGolf activities. He also will be in charge of JacklinGolf technical publications, educational seminars and marketing of Jacklin turfgrass varieties.

Brighton Court Assisted Living Community in the Spokane Valley announced the following staff additions:

Jennifer Hardin was named the new director of assisted living. A registered nurse, she previously worked in Dr. Fred Viren’s office, specializing in geriatrics.

Kathryn Russell was hired as director of community relations. She will oversee marketing and activities.

Jim Adolfson was appointed kitchen manager and dietary supervisor. Adolfson has operated his own restaurant and catering service and worked at Patsy Clark’s, The Onion and Red Lion hotels.

Edmund Yarwood has been named permanent dean of the Eastern Washington University College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. Yarwood, who has served as interim dean of the college since last year, is a professor of Russian and English at Eastern. He earned a Ph.D. in Slavic literatures from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Rev. Michael McFarland, associate professor of computer science at Boston College, has been named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Gonzaga University. He replaces Rev. J. Kevin Waters, who is stepping down as dean after 13 years to write music and teach in the music department. McFarland, who has been a consultant to AT&T Bell Laboratories since 1986, served as chair of Boston College’s computer science department from 1992-95.

Egghead Inc. has named Edward Wozniak as vice president and CFO, replacing Brian Bender who has taken a position at another company. Wozniak has more than 12 years in retailing with Melville Corp. and Federated Department Stores and 13 years in the consumer products industry with General Foods Corp. Most recently, he was senior vice president and CFO of the Thom McAn Shoe Co.

Spokane Public Radio KPBX FM 91 has hired Sheila Mulligan as a development representative. She succeeds Christie Bruntlett, who has retired. Mulligan’s duties include procuring program underwriting, selling program guide advertising and assisting with special events.

Marcy Harding and Hubert Prince have joined the Spokane office of John L. Scott as sales associates.

Moving up:

Mike Davis has been appointed chief operating officer of Tidyman’s. Davis joined the supermarket chain in 1984 as chief financial officer. Prior to that, he was an accountant for Coopers and Lybrand.

Tim Carson has been promoted to senior sales manager at Alpine Industries. Carson, who has been an independent distributor of Alpine Air Purification Products since 1991, will oversee national and international marketing and training.

WenDt Advertising has elected Lorie Fransen corporate secretary. Fransen, who joined the firm in 1987, is head of the agency’s accounting department. The company also announced six new shareholders: Colleen Dabler, accounting assistant; Sue Edgmond, Chris Hallock, and Mike Emenegger, art directors; Doug Phillips, account manager; and Don Serido, traffic manager at Wendt’s Great Falls, Mont., office.

Egghead Inc. announced the following management promotions: Peter Grossman was named executive vice president responsible for all customer offers.

Ron Smith will oversee all elements of the customer delivery system as a senior vice president.

Kurt Conklin has responsibility for logistics and control as a senior vice president.

Tom Collins was named vice president of management information services.

Jim Kalasky becomes vice president of merchandising.

Jan Plester was named vice president of Pentzer Corp., the private investment firm owned by Washington Water Power. Plester, who joined Pentzer in 1991, previously served as business manager.

Starting up:

Spokane based Johnson Matthey Electronics (JME), has opened a new assembly products and services business unit at its facility in San Jose, Calif., to begin manufacturing and assembling temperature-sensing components and other subsystems for original equipment manufacturers and semiconductor manufacturers.

Karrie Fay and Sandra Rowe have opened a Farmers Insurance office at 225 N. Sullivan in Veradale and will specialize in family insurance sales. Together they have more than 15 years of experience in the insurance industry. Fay previously was with another Farmers Insurance office, and Rowe worked for Medical Service Corp.

Ray Watson, a therapist and author of the book “Putting Power in Your Perceptions,” has opened an individual, adult and marriage counseling practice in Coeur d’Alene. Northwest Behavioral Health Care is located at 2170 Ironwood Center Drive, Suite B. Watson earned a doctoral degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Los Angeles.

Elected:

The Colville Chamber of Commerce has installed Rick Cole, Colville superintendent of schools, as its new president. Other officers include: Rod Fogle, first vice president; and Ron Rehn, second vice president. Jeff Pitts, Mike Hanson, and Bill Stewart are new board members.

The following officers were elected by the Idaho Academy of Family Physicians for 1996: Dr. Robert McFarland, Coeur d’Alene, president; Dr. Kay Rusche, Lewiston, presidentelect; and Dr. David Luther, St. Maries, vice president.

The Credit and Financial Development Division-Spokane Chapter, National Association of Credit Management elected officers for the 1996-97 fiscal year: president, Cindy Cloe, Washington Auto Carriage; presidentelect, Jacqueline Witter, Telect Inc.; vice-president, LaDonna Scribner, KXLY TV; secretary, Michele Walter, Core-Mark International; treasurer, Nancy Carlson, Cominco Fertilizers; members-at-large, Nancy Lee, Andrews Equipment, and Jennifer Foster-Fausett, Spokane Stainless Products.

Glen Kartheiser, president of Ureco, Inc., in Columbia Falls, Mont., was elected president of the Timber Products Manufacturers Association (TPM).

Kudos:

Hanna & Associates received top awards at the 1995 Bank Marketing Association advertising awards competition and at the National Grocers Association creative excellence in advertising competition. The campaigns were completed on behalf of Sterling Savings and Tidyman’s grocery chain.

Coldwell Banker Grand Realty was selected as the Coldwell Banker Premier Office, the highest honor given to Coldwell Banker real estate offices that consistently demonstrate exceptional performance and dedication. This is the third year the office has received this award.

Texas Instruments honored Johnson Matthey Electronics with its 1995 Supplier Excellence Award. JME has received the award three times in four years in recognition of its performance in supplying sputtering targets, which are used in the manufacture of integrated circuits for the semiconductor industry. JME is one of 81 recipients of the Supplier Excellence Award for 1995.

JME was also honored by Korean President Yong-Sam Kim, on behalf of Korea’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, with an award for its significant contributions to the Korean semiconductor and flat panel display industries. The award was the first of its kind ever given to a 100 percent foreign-owned company.

Gair Petrie, of the Paine-Hamblen law firm, has been elected a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, an association of lawyers who have been recognized as outstanding practitioners in the fields of estate and trust planning and administration, related taxation, business succession and insurance planning, insurance benefits and fiduciary litigation.
