Rival Militias War In Mogadishu

Fierce fighting between rival Somali militias reignited Saturday, killing at least seven people and wounding 13 others in Mogadishu.

The battle between forces of Gen. Mohamed Farah Aidid and those of Osman Hassan Ali began Friday afternoon and resumed Saturday morning after an overnight lull in the capital.

Troops fired machine guns, rocketpropelled grenades, anti-aircraft missiles and mortar shells.

Aidid’s forces are fighting those of his former aide and financier, Hassan Ali, for control of the rich agricultural valleys and ports in southern Somalia.

Somalia has been without an effective government since the ouster of dictator Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991.
