Christopher Roney Earns Eagle Scout Rank

Christopher Roney, son of Rich and Ana Roney, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. A graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, he is a member of Troop 324. His eagle Project involved planning and preparation of large garden areas for the Hutton Settlement Community.

Janet Lynn Simpson, a student at College of the Ozarks, has been listed in “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Simpson.

Joanne Kovac, a 1989 graduate of Gonzaga Prep and a 1994 graduate of Washington State University, received a master of arts degree in sociology from the University of Houston, at Clear Lake, Texas.

Kovac was also inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society, and selected for honors in “Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges.” The YMCA has appointed her as co-director for Outdoor Adventure summer camp in Houston.

Navy Seaman Andrew H. Norton, a 1984 graduate of Upper Columbia Academy of Spangle, was selected as Bluejacket of the Quarter and received a Letter of Commendation while serving at Naval Air Reserve, Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego.

He joined the Navy in April 1995.

Krisanne Sinnott, a 1990 graduate of North Central High School, has graduated from West Chester University, West Chester, Penn., with a degree in computer science.

Marine Cpl. Michael S. Bailey, son of Donald and Carol Austen, Otis Orchards, was recently promoted to his present rank while serving with Second Assault Amphibious Battalion, Second Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

A 1990 graduate of University High School, he joined the Marine Corps in May 1993.

Sarah Van Gerpen, Spokane, graduated magna cum laude from George Fox College, Newburg, Ore., with a degree in communication arts.

Nance Van Winckel, Cheney, won the 1996 poetry chapbook contest from the Floating Bridge Press and $250. Her poem, “A Measure of Heaven,” was selected from 65 entries statewide.

Duane Zink, Spokane, received a doctorate of optometry degree from Pacific University, Forest Grove, Ore.

Nine Spokane residents graduated from Evergreen State College, Olympia: Timothy Arnold, son of Barbara and Alan Arnold; Darcy Bristow, daughter of Tom Bristow and Jill Alexander; Natalie M. Cartwright, daughter of Charlene and Roger Ruteosky; Joyce M. Heritage, M. Arrington HughesTremper; Richard Morgan Long; and Maria Domitrovich-Lopez, daughter of R.J. and Jean Domitrovich; Erika Ressa, daughter of Pat Marleau; and Carson Strege-Flora, daughter of Karen Strege and Hank Voderberg.
