Clinesmith Ices State’s All-Star Win Washington Girls Turn Back Oregon Counterparts 72-62
Stacy Clinesmith scored a gamehigh 22 points in leading the Washington girls to a 72-62 victory over Oregon on Sunday in the Northwest Shootout all-star prep basketball game in Portland.
Clinesmith, a 5-foot-4 guard from Mead High School, sank 6 of 8 free throws in the last 2 minutes to thwart an Oregon rally that had cut Washington’s lead from 21 to four points. She is headed for UC Santa Barbara in the fall.
Shera Looney, a 6-foot-2 center from Eastlake High in Bellevue, scored six straight points to lead a 10-0 Washington run that produced a 58-37 lead with 12:26 left in the game.
Looney, who will attend Boise State, finished with 10 points.
The Oregon girls rallied behind Lauren Cooper’s eight points, out-scoring Washington 23-5 during the next nine minutes.
Shannon Thorne’s 3-pointer and Liz Barrett’s free throw cut the lead to 64-60 with just over two minutes remaining.
But Washington stopped the slide by playing better defense and letting Clinesmith control the ball, forcing Oregon to foul.
Clinesmith made 12 of the 17 free throws in the game and also sank two 3-pointers.
Oregon was led by Cooper, a 6-1 center from Crescent Valley in Corvallis. Cooper, who will attend Montana, totaled 14 points and four rebounds. Robbie Nix of West Linn and Cathy McNeeley of Philomath scored 12 apiece.
In the boys all-star game, Mike McShane of South Salem scored seven straight points to put Oregon ahead for good as it rallied from an 18-point deficit to defeat Washington 95-83. Washington led by 10 points at halftime and was ahead 67-49 with 14:38 left in the game, when Oregon mounted its rally.
Washington, which was led by Quincy Wilder’s 18 points, never got closer than eight the rest of the game.
Washington guards Jared Stevenson and Richie Frahm scored 17 and 14 points, respectively. Frahm, who went to Battle Ground High, will attend Gonzaga this fall. He made 4-of-7 3-point shots.
