Activities At Bemiss, Shaw Will Provide Hours Of Entertainment For Children
School-age kids in northeast Spokane have a range of free activities, from basketball and computer training to self-defense and public speaking, available this summer.
Many of the events are open to anyone who drops into the open gyms at Bemiss Elementary and Shaw Middle School. Bemiss is open to elementary-age kids Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for everything from soccer and volleyball to crafts and public-service programs.
Shaw is open Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7 to 10 p.m. In addition to sports, activities will include music, dancing, movies and guest speakers.
Other activities are available to a limited number of students who pre-register. Sign-up forms are available at the schools.
A six-week course in Internet computer training runs Monday to Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m., at the ESD Technology Center, 4022 E. Broadway. Sign up deadline is July 1.
Black-belt instructors are offering a six-week course on non-aggressive self defense from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Shaw gym for kids age 12 and over. Registration is required before the start of class Tuesday. Information and forms are available at both Shaw and Bemiss.
A six-week course on public speaking and leadership training is also being offered at Shaw starting Tuesday. Registration forms for that are also available at the schools.
The programs are being coordinated through Educational Service District 101 with grants from the Private Industry Council, the Northeast Community Center and the city of Spokane. Volunteer help for the programs is spearheaded by COPS Northeast.
The offerings are a result of surveys of 300 school-age kids in northeast Spokane, said Anne Millane, director of youth employment training programs at ESD 101.
