Kate Johann Named Music Student Of Year
Kate Johann, an eight-year-old Post Falls piano student, was recently named the Northwest Academy of Music Student of the Year for 1996.
Johann, daughter of David and Linda Johann, received a musical trophy and a piano pin and is featured on a plaque at the academy. She also plays keyboard and rhythm instruments and has been active in many musical activities, including the Prairie View Elementary and Huck Finn Days talent shows, demonstrating piano skills to first graders and participating in area parades aboard the Academy Musicianship float.
Honorable-mention recipients included: Georgina Giffin, Stacey Orlando, Gwen Barron, Taylor Williams, and Amy Werfelman. Giffin also received the Best Composition Award for work submitted during the spring composition workshop.
Leonora L. (Lee) Mobbs, Hauser Lake, recently received a porcelain Madonna in a bouquet of pink carnations when she was named the 1996 Mother of the Year by the Altar Society of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rathdrum.
Mobbs, a mother of three, moved to Hauser Lake in 1972 from California and has been active in school and parish support programs, including 25 years of teaching CCD.
She was widowed in 1972 and is currently raising two of her seven grandchildren. Mobbs was nominated by her middle son, John, with a written tribute to her life.
Bill Bell, Hayden Lake resident and former Peace Corp Volunteer, was recently honored as the 1996 Father of the Year by the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church Altar Society in Rathdrum.
Bell, who graduated from Penn State in 1972, currently works as an architect in urban design for the city of Spokane. He also served as a Coeur d’Alene city planner for eight years.
Bell and his wife served with the Peace Corp in Guatemala in the 1970s and later spent two years as coworkers of Mother Theresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Peru.
The local office of Smith Barney Inc. recently donated $6,000 to Children’s Village as part of the company’s nationwide contributions program.
Benefits from the Smith Barney Corporate Challenge Golf Tournament, to take place at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course in October, will also be donated to the Children’s Village.
