Rogers Grad Almost Makes Olympic Squad
Rogers High graduate Sarah Schwald came close in her bid to make the U.S. Olympic track and field team.
She was just 1.78 seconds away from the third and final spot on the team but couldn’t get out of the pack in the 1,500 meter final. Her seventh-place finishing time of 4:13.0 was just off her finals qualifying time of 4:12.68.
A record-setting state distance champion while at Rogers from 1990 to 1992, Schwald ran collegiately at Arkansas.
MVP of all she surveys
If there were a most valuable player of the Washington-Oregon all-star basketball series, Mead graduate Stacy Clinesmith was it.
Slicing through Oregon players like she did those from Washington, she scored 22 points, including 12 of 17 free throws, and led Washington to a 72-62 victory.
Clinesmith was a Greater Spokane League, Washington AAA Tournament and local all-star playoff game MVP. She also was named Player of the Year in Washington.
The way the University of California-Santa Barbara-bound athlete played in Oregon, she could have made a clean sweep of the accolades.
Shadle team leads Legion
Shadle Park’s Eagle Hardware team has the early advantage among North Division AA American Legion baseball teams.
Reports have been sporadic from coaches in the division, with Eagle Hardware at 6-0 and leading three challengers, from Lakeside, West Valley and Mead.
Last week Eagle won twice, including 6-4 over fourth-place Bob Hess Photo from Mead. Jeff Lafferty pitched the win and had a home run.
Kyle Heuett had three hits, including a triple. He also tripled in Eagle’s earlier victory over winless Fast Break Pizza.
The loss reported by Bob Hess Photo was just the second for the team, which was half a game behind B&C/ Dix in the standings.
B&C pitcher Kris Granlund has won three of four decisions for his team.
