Ritzville’s Ffa Named State’s Outstanding Chapter

The Ritzville Future Farmer’s Association was named Washington state’s Outstanding Chapter at the FFA state convention. This is believed to be the first time in memory that an Eastern Washington chapter has taken top honors, according to Mike Schrag, adviser.

In addition, the chapter’s parliamentary procedure team was named State Champion and earned the opportunity to compete at the national FFA convention in Kansas City, Mo.

Team members are: Jared Templin, Travis DeVore, Kyle Bauer, Matt Schwisow and Marcie Kison. Templin also received second place in the citizenship competition. Each student was named a National Champion in the Land and Homesite Judging competition in Oklahoma City in May.

Alisha Walli was chosen to compete in Kansas City for the title of American Royal Ambassador.

The Meat Identification and Evaluation Team, with members Lisa McRae, Alicia Jones, Michelle Johnson, Hillary Weber and Louie Mock, placed second.

Commodity Marketing team members Lisa DeVore, Jared Templin, Marcie Kison, Kyle Bauer and Tom Balfe placed third. The Freshman Rituals Team is composed of Jaime Wellsandt, Morgane Plager, Lori McRae, Brian Daubert, Russell Martin-Jenkins and Veronica Schoesler. Schoesler also won sixth place in the Creed Speaking Contest.

Nathan Wood, Jason Warriner, Lisa McRae, Scott Galbreath, Alicia Jones and Matt Rood received the State Farmer Degree. Jennie Mock, Alisha Walli and Jennifer Simonsen received the American Farmer Degree.

Justin Haley, a 1992 graduate of Ferris High School, has been inducted into the University of Washington’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter. He graduated with honors from UW this year for completing general and departmental honor programs. Only about 40 students receive this accolade.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Haley, Spokane, and Marina Haley, Leavenworth, Wash.

Dan Hunt, a graduating senior from East Valley High School, received a 1996 Institute halftuition scholarship to DeVry in Phoenix, Ariz.

Several Inland Northwest students have been recognized by the American Automobile Association in a nationwide safety poster program.

Seven Honorable Mention awards were received by students of art instructor Claudia Halseth of Shadle Park High School.

“School’s Open - Drive Carefully” was the theme used by 11th-grade students Tony Chantrill, Greg Hayes, Kendra Johnson and Irina Korenkova; 10th grade: Mary Bass; ninth grade: Christine Keinath.

Sam Priddy, a 10th-grade student, was recognized for his poster, “Develop the Safety Belt Habit.”

Ashley Delzell, a first-grader at Trinity School, received an Honorable Mention award for her poster, “Cooperate with Your Safety Patrol.” Her teacher is Jan Brown.

Angela Kramer, a student of Linda Schrag, received Honorable Mention for her poster, “Walking Against Traffic.”
