Stars Learn Opponents For Aau Tournament

The Spokane Stars 18U Too basketball team received its schedule for pool play in the National 18U and 16U AAU Girls Basketball Championships.

The Stars play Indiana at 8:30 p.m. July 6 at Mountain View Middle School. They play a team from Vermont at 4:30 p.m. July 7 at East Valley High School. Pool play concludes July 8, with the 18 Toos playing a Potomac Valley team at Chase Middle School at 8:30 p.m.

The schedules for the other Stars teams, 18U No. 1 and two U16s, were announced earlier. The top two teams in each pool, 10 for the 18s and 16 for the 16s, advance to the double-elimination championship tournament, which concludes July 13.

One change was made in the schedule for the Stars 16U No. 1 team. During their July 6 double-header at East Valley, the first game will be at 10:30 a.m.

Tournament director Ron Adams had to add another site to help accommodate the 114 teams in the two tournaments, so additional workers are needed at Mountain View the first two days of the tournament. Scorekeepers and clock operators are needed. To sign up call the AAU office at 924-5227.

Bowling

Spokane’s Jim Frazier is in 18th place, with 5,520 pins in 26 games, after the fourth round of the Bowling Proprietors Association of America’s Senior U.S. Open in Las Vegas.

Spokane’s Gary Mage (5,490) is tied for 22nd.

Golf

University of Idaho coach Dan Koesters shot a 3-under-par 69 to take a four-stroke lead after two rounds of the $74,000 Sunriver Oregon Open. Koesters, who sank a 117-yard shot with a pitching wedge for an eagle at the 386-yard first hole, was at 5-under 139, heading into today’s final round at the 7,227-yard Crosswater Golf Club.

Chikage Niwa of Lacey, Wash., survived a sudden-death playoff to win the annual Washington Women’s Amateur tournament at Langley.

The 19-year-old Niwa took the title when Paula Patterson of Vancouver, Wash., three-putted the extra hole from 21 feet to bogey. Niwa and Patterson finished with 225 totals, 3 over for 54 holes on the 5,651-yard Useless Bay Golf and Country Club.

Jennifer Hatley of Spokane followed up rounds of 88 and 82 with an 11-over 85.

Boxing

Mahlon Kerwick of Spokane earned a 3-2 decision over Defavio Denota of California to advance to the championship of the 119-pound division at the Junior Olympic Amateur tournament at Marquette, Mich.

Kerwick (48-14 overall) will meet Ricardo Juarez of Houston for the title Saturday. If he wins, Kerwick, a 15-year-old sophomore at University High, will remain in Marquette for a 10-day training camp to prepare for a July 11-13 international tournament.
