Mortars Fired At British Barracks
Suspected terrorists fired mortars at British army barracks on Friday, damaging several buildings but causing no injuries, firefighters and British army officials said.
Assailants shot three mortar shells from a vehicle parked near the gates of the barracks, Lt. Col. Jan-Dirk Merveldt said. The vehicle had British license plates, police said.
The attack was “presumably by a terrorist group,” the British military said. Authorities refused to elaborate.
The shells exploded in the air before hitting their target, a gasoline pump, police said.
The Osnabrueck barracks were the target of a 1989 bombing blamed on the Irish Republican Army.
