Horse racing

Rubicon and jockey Antonio Castanon barreled down the outside stretch to win by a head the $10,800 Soroptomists of Federal Way purse at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Wash., Saturday.

Strong Pursuit and Halo Passer finished in a dead heat just behind the winner. Justaboutdoesit made a strong run on the rail but finished out of the money by a neck.

Rubicon won the 6-furlong sprint for 4-year-olds and up in 1:11 3/5, paying $8.80, $4.30 and $3.80.

“I thought that I would be closer to the pace. As soon as he went wide in the lane, he got real competitive,” Castanon said.

The rare three-horse exacta combinations with Strong Pursuit or Halo Passer behind Rubicon returned $27.60. Strong Pursuit paid $3.40 and $4.20 and Halo Passer paid $3 and $4.60.

American Legion baseball

Griz go on-line

University of Montana sports fans with computers will be able to keep track of their favorite teams via the Internet.

The Grizzlies have gone online.

Subscribers to on-line computer services can access the web page at http://www.umt.edu/sports

Each UM sport has its own page with a variety of information.

The women’s basketball page includes schedules, rosters, records, player profiles and newspaper articles from the 1995-96 season.

Trish Duce, assistant women’s basketball coach, is in charge of the project, including updating each page shortly after each game is completed.

“It’s not useful unless it can be maintained and updated,” Duce said.

Duce said the web site could be especially appealing to UM alumni and fans living in other parts of the country, giving them instant access to Montana news.

“I’m hoping to create real good sites for sports such as tennis and golf, which usually don’t get as much publicity as football or basketball,”she said.
