Frances Lanning Spokane

Service for Frances A. (Blanda) (Holmes) Lanning, 73, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Lanning, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

She graduated from Kinman Business School and worked as an accountant and bookkeeper.

She was employed by Anthony, Baker and Burns, and also held a Realtor’s license.

She and her husband, Laurence Lanning, spent winters in Redding, Calif.

Mrs. Lanning was a member of the Spokane Business and Professional Womens Organization and was a volunteer in the gift shops of Deaconess Medical Center and the Redding (California) Medical Center.

Her first husband, Victor Holmes, was killed in World War II.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years; a son, Paul Lanning of Spokane; a stepson, John Lanning of Los Angeles; two stepdaughters, Mary Kanna of Canon City, Colo., and Sally Armstrong of Gold Field, Nev.; two brothers, Joseph Blanda and John Tormino, both of Spokane; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Blanche Hancock Spokane

Memorial service for Blanche J. Hancock, 90, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hancock, who died Wednesday, was born in Brooten, Minn.

She had lived in Spokane for 63 years and was a homemaker.

Her husband, John Hancock, died in 1980.

She is survived by two sons, Alvin Hancock and Kayo Hancock, and two daughters, Valdene Troyer and Janice Stasch, all of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Thomas Roop Spokane

Memorial service for the Rev. Thomas W. Roop, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

Rev. Roop, who died Tuesday, was born in Williamsport, Pa.

He served as a pastor in Newport and Washougal, Wash., and Portland before he arrived in Spokane in 1975.

He served as pastor at South Hill Bible Church until he retired in 1981.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mabel Roop; two sons, Thomas Roop of Portland and William Roop of Hillsboro, Ore.; two daughters, Marjorie Michener of York Haven, Pa., and Betty Curry Johnson of Westport, Conn.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church.

Elaine Bryant Spokane

Memorial service for Elaine Bryant, 56, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bryant, who died Thursday, was born in Spokane.

She graduated from North Central High School and worked for the state for 17 years at Lakeland Village.

She is survived by a son, William Spencer of Spokane; a brother, James Hingston of Sumner, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Ernest Small Spokane

No service will be held for Ernest LeRoy Small at his request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Small, who died Tuesday, was born in Rice, Wash. He was 71.

He graduated from high school in Kettle Falls, Wash., and had lived in Spokane since 1948.

He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, and worked as a mail carrier from 1951 until 1982.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2.

He is survived by two sons, James Small of Chewelah, Wash., and Dennis Small of South Bend, Wash.; a sister, Sylva Lenocker of Tillamook, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Wilma Vannurden Spokane

Service for Wilma M. Vannurden, 65, is set for 11 a.m Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Vannurden, who died Thursday, was born in Edgar, Neb.

She was a homemaker and lived in Spokane for 47 years.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Harold Vannurden; a son, Mark Vannurden of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Sharon King of Spokane; a sister, Opal Abitz of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Dessie Pierce Davenport, Wash.

Family service for Dessie G. Pierce , 91, will be held. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pierce, who was born in Missouri, died Wednesday.

She moved to Davenport in 1915 and was a homemaker. She had worked as a telephone operator and in the kitchen at Lincoln County Hospital when it opened in 1963.

She was also a quilt maker, and made five quilts when she was 90.

She is survived by five daughters, Viola Coley and Bernice Stormo, both of Davenport, Marjorie Coleman of Crescent City, Calif., Peg Dillon of Manteca, Calif., and Jackie Sims of Sagle, Idaho; 11 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
