U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Team Set
John Roethlisberger of Minneapolis scored a 9.375 in the vault, his final event, in Boston to seal first place and a spot on his second men’s Olympic gymnastics squad. The usually low-key Roethlisberger jumped into the arms of his father and coach, Fred Roethlisberger, and grinned as he ran off the platform.
Roethlisberger, who started the night with a 1.2-point lead, finished with 228.873 points. Blaine Wilson of Columbus, Ohio, was second with 228.159.
The remaining five members of the Olympic team are Mihai Bagiu and Chainey Umphrey both of Albuquerque, N.M., Jair Lynch of Washington, John Macready of Los Angeles and Kip Simons of Bloomsburg, Pa.

Former wrestling gold medalists and world champions Kenny Monday and Bruce Baumgartner have been chosen co-captains for the U.S. Olympic freestyle team. Monday, of Tulsa, Okla., will compete at 163 pounds, his third Olympics. Baumgartner, of Cambridge Springs, Pa., will compete at 286 pounds, his fourth Olympics.
Team USA baseball loses
After rolling to 18 straight wins, Team USA was shut down by defending world champion Cuba and its ace Rolando Arrojo 5-1 in Zebulon, N.C.
The victory was a bit of revenge for powerful Cuba, which was swept in a four-game exhibition series last year that became the cornerstone of Team USA’s 39-game winning streak.
At Decatur, Ill., Lori Harrigan pitched a no-hitter and Michele Smith a one-hitter as the U.S. Olympic softball team routed two Decatur clubs, 8-0, 10-0, in a doubleheader. The U.S. is 56-1 on its 21-city pre-Olympic tour.
Suspension shortened
Australian swim coach Scott Volker, originally suspended for two years by FINA, swimming’s world governing body, had his suspension reduced from one year to seven months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Volker was suspended after one of his swimmers, Samantha Riley, tested positive for the prohibited substance propoxyphene metabolite at a meet in Rio de Janiero last November. The ruling means Volker is free to begin coaching in international swimming events starting today.
