Aaron Calvert Gets Medal For Saving Young Boy’s Life
Navy Seaman Aaron R. Calvert, a 1991 Ferris High School graduate, received the Navy-Marine Corps Medal for saving the life of a young boy who fell from a ferry in Victoria Harbor, Hong Kong.
Calvert swam 75 meters to reach the boy, and a shipmate also attempting rescue, grabbed the unconscious boy and towed him back to safety.
After reaching his ship, he helped administer first aid.
Calvert, son of Lonnie R. Calvert, Colbert, joined the Navy in 1992.
Northwood Junior High students won three categories at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival held recently at University of Idaho. Directed by Ann Fennessy, Northwood vocalists won both the junior high and middle school categories. Northwood musicians placed first in the junior high instrumental category; their director is Lee Shook.
Fifteen Spokane students were named to the Dean’s List at Carroll College, Helena.
Earning perfect 4.0 grade point averages were: Rodrik Pistick, Amy Wendelburg and Matthew Laughlin.
The other honor students were: John Van Gemert, Amy Arnold, Kelli Fitzsimmons, Rurik Pistick, Tatiana Pistick, Salina Davis, Susan Goffinet, Kreg Kayler, Scott Smith, Jean Cleveland, Melissa Murray and Troy Wilson.
Andrea Gray and Trish Schwartz, both of the Reardan (Wash.) Chapter of the Future Farmers of America, attended the 1995 weeklong Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. The trip was sponsored by the Reardan FFA and the Reardan Lions Club.
Sarah Elizabeth Tompkins, daughter of Linda Tompkins, Spokane, was named to the President’s List at Western Washington University, Bellingham, where she is a freshman. She is a graduate of Central Valley High School.
Vanessa Waldref has attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. Waldref, a sophomore at Gonzaga Prep, is the daughter of George and Rita Waldref, Spokane.
Stephen Schreiner, a junior at Gonzaga Prep, will represent his school at Washington State University’s English Honors Program Scholarship Competition this month.
Schreiner, one of 20 finalists statewide selected to compete, is the son of John and Jane Schreiner.
Kelly Jones and Jewel Kosioreck, both Gonzaga Prep students, have been selected by the National Honor Society Faculty Advisory Board as nominees for the National Honor Society Scholarship competition.
Jones is the daughter of John and Connie Jones, and Kosioreck is the daughter of Kaz Kosioreck.
