Ruff Makes All-Pac-10 Team
Women’s basketball
Washington State University senior forward Jenni Ruff was selected to the All-Pacific-10 Conference first team for the first time.
Ruff, second in the Pac-10 in scoring with an average of 23.2 points per game, was backed up at the forward position by: Adia Barnes (Arizona), Arianne Boyer (Oregon), Tanja Kostic (Oregon State), Kate Starbird (Stanford) and Tina Thompson (USC).
Center Renae Fegent (Oregon) and guards Nickey Hilbert (UCLA), Brenda Pantoja (Arizona) and Jamila Wideman (Stanford) rounded out the first team.
Kostic and Starbird were named Pac-10 co-players of the year, while Stanford coaches Amy Tucker and Marianne Stanley were honored as co-coaches of the year.
WSU guard Jade Hyett was named to the league’s all-freshman team along with Erica Gomez (UCLA), Jennie Leander (California), Erica Mashia (USC) and Jamie Redd (Washington). Hyett was voted the freshman of the year.
Ducks host record-breaking crowd
At Eugene, Ore., Betty Ann Boeving had 19 points and Arianne Boyer added 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Oregon to a 69-60 victory over No. 21 Oregon State in the final Pac10 game for both teams.
Oregon (18-10 overall, 10-8 Pac-10) shot 50 percent in handing Oregon State (19-8, 11-7) its third straight loss. The game drew 9,738 fans, a Pac-10 record for a women’s game.
Big Sky women’s tournament
At Missoula, Mont., Mika Brown poured in 30 points and Shelley Berg scored half of her 12 points in the final 1:15 of overtime as Weber State (17-11) edged Boise State (12-15) 84-82 in the semifinals of the Big Slu Conference women’s basketball tournament.
In the tournament’s other semifinal game, Greta Koss scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Montana (23-4) defeated Montana State (15-14) 72-58.
The Wildcats will play the Grizzlies tonight for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
