Panel Backs Rules On Jacked-Up Pickups

Legislation restricting jacked-up pickups squeaked out of an Idaho Senate committee Tuesday, just moments before a deadline for the committee to shut down for the session.

The Senate Transportation Committee agreed to send the bill to the full Senate for amendments. “That was, very candidly, the only chance to keep the bill alive,” said committee Chairman Sen. Evan Frasure, R-Pocatello. “I think it’s certainly a good enough case that we should take a serious look at it.”

Rep. June Judd, D-St. Maries, sponsor of the bill, offered an amendment to correct a clause that now says bumpers should not only be lowered, but should also extend the full width of the vehicle’s tires and wheels. Four-wheelers had told the committee that such bumper widths aren’t available.

“The amendment answers the question that was brought up the other day,” Judd said. “We’re just trying to get bumpers down to where they don’t hit me in the eye, they’re down lower.”

The bill already has passed the House. But if the Senate amends it, the House would then have to concur with the amendments. That’ll have to happen quickly if the measure is to pass before the planned adjournment of the Legislature on Friday.
