Obituaries

William Ednie Silverton, Idaho

Memorial service for William Pullar Ednie, 92, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Shoshone Living Center in Kellogg. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ednie, who was born in Scotland, died Tuesday.

He had lived in Hawaii since 1930 and moved to the Silver Valley in 1993.

Mr. Ednie had worked as a factory superintendent for Kohala Sugar Co. in Hawaii before retiring in 1968.

He was a member of the Kalahikiola Congregational Church and enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Nancy; one son, James of Hilo, Hawaii; one daughter, Margaret Herd Ednie Fraser of Volcano, Hawaii; one brother Ernest Ednie of Honolulu, Hawaii; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Walter Phelps Pinehurst, Idaho

Graveside service for Walter M. Phelps, 84, will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Pinehurst. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Phelps, who was born in Montana, died Sunday.

He moved to the Silver Valley in 1941 from Montana and worked as a miner for the Bunker Hill Co., retiring in 1973 after 25 years.

Mr. Phelps was a member of the Bunker Hill 20-Year Club and the YMCA.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Wilma; one son, Virgil of California; one sister, Julie Teigen of South Dakota; three brothers, Albert and Evrett , both of Montana, and Larrie of South Dakota; and six grandchildren.

William L. Robertson Spokane

Memorial service for William L. Robertson, 82, is today at 1 p.m. at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Robertson, who was born in Newport, Wash., died Saturday.

A 20-year resident of Spokane, he worked as a carpenter.

He was a World War II Army veteran, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hillyard Post No. 1474 and the Eagles Aerie No. 2.

He is survived by two sons, Mark Robertson and Scott Robertson, both of Seattle; two daughters, Colleen Robertson of Portland and Bonnie Roth of Seattle; five sisters, Merle Rush, Bonnie Robertson and Opal Elixman, all of Spokane, and Pat Jensen and Bette Robertson of Anchorage, Alaska.

John Mercer Spokane

Private family inurnment for John W. Mercer, 74, will be at Peone Prairie Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mercer, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He graduated from Riverside High School.

After working for the State Transportation Department, he became a member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 370, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Eagles Lodge. He was also a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center for six years.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan Barnett and Linda Wilson, both of Spokane; one son, Scott Mercer of Spokane; one brother, Charles Mercer of Kamiah, Idaho; and 12 grandchildren.

Lawrence Numbers Spokane

Service is planned for Lawrence Gerald Numbers, 92, at 1:30 p.m. today at Shiloh Hills Baptist Church. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Numbers, who was born in Monmouth, Ill., died Saturday.

He moved to Spokane in 1917 after his mother died, to live with an aunt and uncle. He worked as an apprentice in the photography business with his uncle.

He bought the studio from his uncle in 1925 and changed the name to Nu-Art Studio. The studio is located in downtown Spokane.

He photographed the former speaker of the house, Tom Foley, as a graduating senior from Gonzaga Prep. During the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, he photographed many Baby Spokane’s for the Spokane Chronicle Baby Contest. He was featured in 1991 on the television program Positively Northwest.

He was a member of Shiloh Hills Baptist Church and served as deacon and trustee for many years.

His wife of 52 years, Josephine, died in 1982.

Mr. Numbers is survived by one son, Gerald Numbers of Spokane; one daughter, Joan Schmitt of Hesperus, Colo.; one sister, Helen Clark of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Hills Baptist Church, Union Gospel Mission or Visiting Nurses Association.

Leo Shauvin Spokane

Memorial service for Leo J. Shauvin, 70, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Shauvin, a lifelong resident of Spokane, died Monday.

He was a graduate of Rogers High School and Eastern Washington University.

He was a World War II Navy veteran.

Mr. Shauvin was a retired school teacher for District 81.

He was a past commodore of the Spokane Yacht Club and a member of the International Order of Blue Gavel.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Elise; and two brothers, Patrick Shauvin of Spokane and Robert Shauvin of Liberty Lake.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ladd ‘Shorty’ Stone Athol, Idaho

No service will be held for Ladd W. “Shorty” Stone, 69. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stone, who was born in Kansas, died Saturday.

He was raised in Kansas and moved to Montana in 1941. He moved to Athol in 1943 and worked at Farragut until serving with the Army in the Philippines during World War II.

He later worked for the Belmont Road District and owned and operated his own mill and logging company for 18 years. He was also a mechanic for many years.

Mr. Stone enjoyed working with anything mechanical and loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Doris; one son, Jay Stone of Seattle; three daughters, Connie Stone, at home, Susan Stone of Cheney and Saundra Stone of Walla Walla; his father, Doc Stone of Walla Walla; and two brothers, Garold Stone of Walla Walla and Bill Stone of Vancouver, Wash.

William Krueger Spokane

Vigil service for William Donald “Don” Krueger, 82, will be held today at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Otis Orchards. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Krueger, who was born in Valley City, N.D., died Monday.

He was a resident of Spokane for 75 years.

He was a farmer and home builder in the Trentwood area and helped in the development of the Trentwood Irrigation District.

Mr. Krueger was on the board of St. Joseph Cemetery and was a member of the East Valley school board, the Grange Credit Union board, Trentwood Grange, the Spokane Valley Eagles and the Inland Farmers Inc., where he also served on the board of directors.

He is survived by his wife, Molly; two sons, Robert Krueger of Spokane and Ronald Krueger of Kodiak, Alaska; two daughters, Karen MacDonald of Prineville, Ore., and Elizabeth Lorenzen of Dixon, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Sather and Margaret Retzel, both of Spokane; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Edward Keating Ritzville, Wash.

Rosary services and funeral Mass for Edward M. Keating, 71, were held Wednesday at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Cremation followed the services. Danekas Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Keating died Saturday.

In 1972 he moved from Los Angeles, Calif., to Caldwell, Idaho, where he worked in an auto parts wholesale store. He came to Spokane in 1982 and retired to Ritzville, where he worked as a handyman. He was an active member of Promise Keepers and St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ines; two daughters, Christina Ibarra of Anaheim, Calif., and Jean Morgan of Davenport, Wash.; two sons, Daniel Sloane of Moses Lake and William Keating of Missoula; two sisters, Mary Ann Sutherland of Summerland, Calif., and Lucille Rader of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Helen Upp Spokane

Memorial service for Helen Upp, 84, will be held today at 1 p.m. at North Hill Christian Church. Private burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Upp, a resident of Spokane since 1941, died Monday.

She was a homemaker and worked at Shadle Park Pharmacy and J.C. Penney. She was a member of North Hill Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd. She is survived by two sons, Ronald Upp of Spokane and Dwayne Upp of Kennewick; one daughter, Gwen Nienhuis of Spokane; two brothers, Bernard Dye and Donald Dye both of California; one sister, Maysel Anderson of Colorado; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Scripture Donations, c/o The Gideons, or to North Hill Christian Church.

William Whinnen Spokane

Service for William E. “Bill” Whinnen, 49, will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Whinnen who was born in Trinidad, Colo., died March 16 in Summerland, British Columbia.

He owned and operated Drilling Specialties Company from 1976 to 1981. At the time of his death he was a custodian for the Central Valley School District.

He was a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.

Mr. Whinnen is survived by his wife of 29 years, Bonnie; three daughters, Amy Waldroup and Heather Whinnen, both of Spokane, and Jennifer Whinnen of Portland; his father, William Whinnen of Spokane; two sisters, Marilyn Breese of New York and Pam Schultz of Chicago; and one grandson.

Alice Ruth Spokane

Private cremation will be held for Alice Ruth who died Saturday. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ruth, 88, was a longtime resident of Spokane,

She worked as a waitress for restaurants in Spokane. During World War II she worked at Big Lakes Box Factory at Shippington Lumber Mill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray. She is survived by two sons, Robert Stone of Portland and Delbert Stone of Spokane; one stepdaughter, Margie Crow of St. Maries; six grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren.

Louis Perry Spokane

Service will be held today for Louis J. Perry, 79, at 11 a.m. at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Perry, a Spokane resident for 55 years, died March 12.

He worked as an engineer for Great Northern Railroad for 35 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Perry is survived by his wife, Thelma; five stepsons, Jerry Tilson of Houston, Ricky Tilson of Staton, Ore., Bobby Tilson of Seattle, Billie Tilson of Etna, Calif., and Wayne Mitchell of Mahama, Ore.; two daughters, June Prieto of Selma, Calif., and Tressa Berry of Bakersfield, Calif.; two brothers, Angelo Perry and Carlo Perry, both of Spokane; two sisters, Virginia Joslin and Mena Heid, both of Spokane; his stepmother, Josephine Perry; 25 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Anna L. Bang Spokane

Service for Anna L. Bang, 68, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel in Fairmount Memorial Park Cemetery. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bang, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Monday.

She attended John Rogers High School and was a member of the Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435. She worked as a secretary.

She is survived by her husband, Peter, of 10 years; one son, Donald R. Robinson of Cedar Pines Park, Calif.; one daughter, Kris Colvin of Spokane; one brother, Gustaf Johnson of Davenport, Wash.; two sisters, Alice Gentry of Creswell, Ore., and Marian Johnson of Sandy, Ore.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Spokane.
