Obituaries

John Vanderwood Spokane

Service for John Vanderwood, 93, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at The Cremation Society of Washington.

Mr. Vanderwood, who died Tuesday, was born in Paterson, N.J.

He moved to Conrad, Mont., with his parents when he was 8 years old. He worked on a cattle ranch when he was young and also worked as a lumber grader, forestry worker, fur trapper and manager of a college farm in Billings, Mont.

He later became a sheet metal worker in the heating and air conditioning business. He owned a hardware store in Cashmere, Wash.

His family relocated to Ewan, Wash., in 1949, and he operated a general country store.

Mr. Vanderwood was active with the Boy Scouts, 4-H, Rainbow Girls and Job’s Daughters.

He moved to Spokane in 1958 and was president of Columbia Basin Chinchilla Breeders and president of the local chapter of Composers, Authors and Artists of America. He received a civic achievement award from Spokane County as a panel representative of SASTA, the para-transit division of the Spokane Transit Authority.

He was a member of the Scottish Rite Masons and Order of the Eastern Star.

Mr. Vanderwood is survived by his wife, Helen; one daughter, Shirley Lyle of Renton, Wash.; two sisters, Nellie Jochems of Conrad and Lena Vanderwood of Medford, Ore.; and two grandsons.

G.H. ‘Jerry’ Kirkingburg Spokane

Memorial service for G.H. “Jerry” Kirkingburg, 65, will be at 5 p.m. today at Crossroads Baptist Church. There will be private inurnment. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kirkingburg, who died March 15, was born in Bismarck, N.D.

He had lived in Spokane for more than 50 years and worked as a stock broker.

Survivors include his mother, Martha, of Spokane; one son, David Kirkingburg of Spokane; one daughter, Debra Dameron of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; two sisters, June Warner and Mario Haye, both of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Cliff Thorson Spokane

Service for Cliff Thorson, 81, was Thursday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial was at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Thorson died Saturday.

He was born in Tiffany, Wis.

He had worked for American Oil in the 1940s in Saudi Arabia. He moved to Spokane in 1952 and farmed near Deer Park.

Mr. Thorson also worked for Deer Park Lumber Co.

He served in the Army from 1942 until 1945.

Mr. Thorson is survived by two sisters, Helen Frye of Moscow, Idaho, and Mildred Marple of Boise.

Rose Keck Vancouver, Wash.

Service for Helen Rose Keck, 89, was Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Keck, a longtime Spokane resident, died Monday. She was born in Rugby, N.D.

She owned Rose’s Beauty Salon for 10 years. She was a member of the Cootiettes and Calvary Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Daniel Keck, died in 1977.

She is survived by one daughter, Etta Gordon of Portland; two sons, Wayne Keck of Ohio and Ron Keck of Seattle; two sisters, Alice Berdahl of Rugby, N.D., and Helen Stoddard of Minot, N.D.; and three grandchildren.

Carl Fredrickson Colville, Wash.

Service for Carl V. Fredrickson, 85, is set for 2 p.m. today at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville. Burial will follow at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville.

Mr. Fredrickson, who was born in Northport, Wash., died Tuesday.

When he was young, he farmed with his father and worked in the woods to help support his family.

He served in the military during World War II and was discharged in 1943.

He married Helen Maki in 1944 in Colville and they lived in the Deep Creek area. He logged, mined and operated a small farm. From 1970 until 1983 he worked for Colmac Industries in Colville. He and his wife moved into Colville in 1986.

He was a member of South Fork Grange No. 220, Northport American Legion Post No. 158 and Colville Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Fred Fredrickson of Colville; three daughters, Donna Cox of Colville, Debbie Heckly of Republic, Wash., and Sandy Fredrickson of Tacoma; one brother, Don Fredrickson of Kettle Falls, Wash.; two sisters, Florence Fackenthall and Alice Rosendahl, both of Colville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Delores Hager Spokane

Service for Delores “Dee” Hager, 72, is set for 10 a.m Saturday at Peaceful Valley Church in Elk. Graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at the Oakesdale (Wash.) Cemetery. Lauer Funeral Home of Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hager, who died Monday, was born in Garfield, Wash.

She graduated from Garfield High School.

She worked for Washington Water Power until 1947, when she married George Hager. They settled in Elk.

Mrs. Hager was a member of Eureka Chapter 92, Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, George; one son, Roger Hager of Elk; three daughters, Marcene Reese of Royal City, Wash., Lynette Bronkhorst of Elk and Darla Irwin of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; one sister, Beverley Peterson of Bothell, Wash.; one brother, Gene Marple of Garfield; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Clara Wilkin Spokane

Service for Clara Wilkin, 90, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Born in Blair, Wis., Mrs. Wilkin died Monday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 60 years.

She was a member of Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, Percy Wilkin, died in 1978.

She is survived by one son, William Wilkin of Newhall, Calif.; one daughter, Connie Babowicz of Gilbert, Ariz.; one brother, Olaf Spaberg of Seattle; two sisters, Karen Solum of Chester, Mont., and Sally Webbert of Spokane; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Francess Wood Otis Orchards

No service will be held for Francess Wood. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wood, who was born in Pawnee, Okla., died Saturday. She was 89.

She had worked as a hostess in the food-service industry.

Mrs. Wood is survived by one daughter, Myrna DeGrasse of Spokane; and two sons, Darrell Vindhurst of Spokane and Howard Vindhurst of Blythe, Calif.

Robert Morrow, M.D. Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Dr. Robert B. Morrow, 73, will be at a later date. Pacific View Memorial Chapel in Lincoln City, Ore., is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Morrow died Monday in Lincoln City while on vacation.

He was born in Anaconda, Mont.

Dr. Morrow graduated from the University of Oregon and received his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School in Portland in 1953. He served an internship at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane and a residency in California.

He married Johanna Flood in Portland in 1954. They moved to Newport in 1955, and Dr. Morrow worked in private practice for 31 years. He retired in 1986.

He was a member of the Beta Theta Phi and TKP fraternities.

He is survived by his wife, Johanna; one son, Robert Morrow of Seattle; two daughters, Kimberly Gaffney of Bozeman, Mont., and Tracey Morrow of Denver; one brother, James Morrow of Missoula; and two grandchildren.

Arnold Johnston Hunters, Wash.

Service for Arnold Peter Johnston, 85, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hunters Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Hunters. Danekas Funeral Home in Colville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnston, a lifetime Hunters resident, died Tuesday at home. He graduated from Columbia High School.

He married Nadine Richter in 1949 in Davenport, Wash., and they settled on the family farm east of Hunters.

He was a farmer and raised grain, hay, cattle and some hogs.

He was a member of Greenwood Park Grange, Hunters Masonic Lodge No. 236, Hunters Fair Board and Hunters Cemetery Board.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Wayne Johnston of Mead and Edward Johnston of Davenport, Wash.; one brother, Amos Johnston of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Katheryn Severn of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made the American Heart Association.

Jerome Williams Spokane

Memorial service for Jerome E. Williams, 70, will be at 10 a.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Williams, who was born in Dodgeville, Wis., died Saturday.

He was a heavy equipment operator and retired from the Operators and Engineers Union Local No. 390.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He is survived by his companion, June Truax of Spokane; two sons, Daniel and David Williams, and two daughters, Angela Sticka and Janelle Shippy, all of Spokane; two brothers, Thomas and Jim Williams; two sisters, June Yoos and RaeAnn Funk; and five grandchildren.

Fred Michael Spokane

Service for Fred R. Michael, 88, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Michael died Tuesday.

He was born in Lincoln, Wash.

He was a wheat farmer in Lincoln County for more than 70 years and was a member of the Mondovi Grange since 1938.

For the past two winters he had worked at the Oregon Raptor Center in Mill City, where he was involved in the preservation of birds of prey.

He is survived by one sister, Ella May Poore.

Donald Berryman Cheyenne, Wyo.

Memorial service for Donald R. Berryman, 65, was Wednesday at Golden Prairie (Wyo.) Baptist Church. Inurnment will be at a later at Fort Wright Cemetery in Spokane. Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball, Neb., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Berryman, a former Spokane resident, died Monday in Cheyenne, where he had lived since 1994. He was born in Scottsbluff, Neb.

He served in the Air Force and in the Washington Air National Guard as an aircraft electrician in Spokane.

He married Alice Trollope in 1951, and they lived in Spokane until 1994.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kalyn of Missoula and Shan of Spokane; three sons, Donnie Lee of Cheyenne, Darrin of Spokane and Forrest of Dutch Flat, Calif.; his mother, Fern Ackerson of Colorado Springs; four brothers, Raymond of Colorado, Ron of Arkansas, and Mick and Lee, both of Idaho; two foster children, Nicole and Travis, both of Spokane; and one grandchild.

Donald Kruger Spokane

Memorial service for Donald Charles Kruger, 66, will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel.

Mr. Kruger died March 15 in Washington, Utah, where he wintered.

He was a lifetime Spokane resident and graduated from North Central High School.

He served in the Air Force from 1947 until 1949. He worked as a truck driver for many years and owned Kruger Boat Works.

He was a member of the Maverick Yacht Club.

His wife, Patricia Kruger, died Oct. 12.

Mr. Kruger is survived by two sons, Donald and James Kruger, both of Spokane; one brother, Cecil Kruger of Spokane; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jim Wagner Spokane

Memorial service for Jim A. Wagner, 49, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at Spokane Valley United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will follow. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wagner, who was born in Shelby, Mont., died Monday of cancer. He graduated from high school in Dodson, Mont.

He had lived in Spokane for 31 years and worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for more than 20 years.

He was a Vietnam veteran and was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees.

Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Joan; two sons, James Wagner of Harrington, Wash., and Bruce Jensen of Rockford, Minn.; three daughters, Heidi Sparks of Spokane, Tamara Humphrey of Gillette, Wyo., and Nicki Miller of California; and one grandchild.

Karl Lindeborg Moscow, Idaho

Service for Karl H. Lindeborg, 75, was held Wednesday at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Private burial will be held later.

Mr. Lindeborg, who was born in Denmark, died Monday.

He moved to the United States in 1954. He received a master’s degree at Utah State University and a doctorate at Oregon State College.

He joined the University of Idaho faculty in 1959 and was a Fulbright Scholar in Norway during the 1960s.

Mr. Lindeborg taught agricultural economics and also conducted research.

He enjoyed writing, traveling, woodworking and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Greta; a daughter, Mary Ann McNeely of Moscow; two grandsons, Steven and Bryan McNeely, both of Coos Bay, Ore.; and four brothers and three sisters, all of Denmark.
