Paul Jones Rathdrum, Idaho
At his request, no service will be held for Paul E. Jones, 76. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Jones, who was born in Ritzville, Wash., died Thursday.
He was raised and educated in Winona, Wash., and attended Eastern Washington University.
He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-25 pilot, reaching the rank of captain.
After his military discharge, he worked as the chief pilot for Shell Oil Co. in the southwestern United States.
He moved to Hayden, Idaho, in 1968 and owned and operated the Hayden Lake Laundry and Dry Cleaning. He sold the business and moved to Sandpoint in 1977 to farm.
He retired in 1993 and moved to Rathdrum.
Mr. Jones enjoyed horses and reading. He was a member of The Gentleman on Horseback Club and the Coeur d’Alene Eagles.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Shirley; three sons, Don Jones of Arizona, Dale Jones of Florida and Monte Slinkard of Post Falls; four daughters, Claudia Quinn of Auburn, Wash., Jean Glee Strickland of Spokane, Kay Salas of California and Tammy Pappas of Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Elsie Peters Spokane
Memorial service for Elsie L. Peters, 79, will be at 3 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Mrs. Peters, who died Thursday, was born in Colfax, Wash., and graduated from high school there.
She and her husband, Harry Peters, operated the Cape Horn Resort on Lake Pend Oreille. She had also been an assistant manager for several apartment complexes for 15 years.
She had lived in Spokane for 50 years and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
Her husband of 52 years, Harry, died in 1992.
She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Dhaenens of Spokane; one brother, Hollis McNeilly of Clovis, Calif.; one sister, Mable Garner of Hutchinson, Kan.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Kathleen Denning Coeur d’Alene
Service for Kathleen I. Denning, 82, will be today at 2 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Mrs. Denning, who was born in Newport, Wash., died Wednesday.
She was raised in Newport and Sandpoint, and worked as a clerk in Sandpoint after high school.
She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1941.
Mrs. Denning enjoyed traveling, especially to Canada, knitting and needlepoint. She was a member of the Coeur d’Alene YMCA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Jack, in 1972.
Survivors include two sons, William Denning of New Hampshire and Joe Denning of North Carolina; one daughter, Joyce Shuter of Boise; and four grandchildren.

Etta Erickson Moscow, Idaho
Memorial service for Etta Christine Erickson, 94, will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Troy Lutheran Church in Troy, Idaho. Private burial will follow at the Dry Creek Cemetery. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Erickson, who was born in Dry Creek near Troy, died Saturday.
She was raised in Dry Creek and attended the country school there.
She was a lifetime Troy resident until moving to Moscow seven years ago.
Mrs. Erickson enjoyed singing, sewing, picking huckleberries, and hosting Scandinavian coffee parties. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was a member of the Troy Lutheran Church. She was also active in church women’s groups. She was a former member of the Rebekkahs and the Dry Creek Welfare Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Eldoris Hunter of Troy; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Troy Fire Department.
Hubert Haslam Spokane
Memorial service for Hubert H. “Hugh” Haslam, will be held at a later date. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.
Mr. Haslam, 72, died Tuesday. He was born in San Miguel, Calif., and had lived in Spokane for 29 years He was a member of Laborers Union Local No. 238 and had worked at Boundary, Little Goose and Lower Granite dams as a high scaler.
He was also a member of Senior Retirees Group. Mr. Haslam is survived by his wife of 30 years, Delma; two daughters, Michaelyn Haslam of Pasadena, Calif., and Denise Haslam of Palm Springs, Calif.; one son, Seth Haslam of Moreno Valley, Calif.; one stepson, Mark Helpingstine of Pasco; one brother, Stewart Sinclair of Jonesburg, Mo.; three sisters, Helen Bruner of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Dixie Thacker of Grass Valley, Calif., and Anice Galland of Yucca Valley, Calif.; and one grandson.

Richard Byers Spokane
Service for Richard F. Byers, 60, is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery Chapel. Private burial will follow. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Byers, who died Wednesday, was born in Flint, Mich.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He worked for Great Northern Railway and later for Northern Pacific Railroad. After they merged he continued to work for Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring after 39 years.
Mr. Byers is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sharon Byers; one daughter, Cathy Phillips, and two sons, Rick and Michael Byers, all of Spokane; his mother, Mary Soiney, and one brother, John Byers, both of Flint; three sisters, Shirley Flowers and Leona Cox, both of Tampa, Fla., and Connie Soule of Flint; and four grandchildren.
Olga Swanson Lewiston
Service for Olga E. Swanson, 80, was held Thursday at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow, Idaho. Burial followed at Burnt Ridge Cemetery.
Mrs. Swanson, who was born in Nora, Idaho, near Troy, died Saturday.
She grew up in Nora and attended Troy and Pomeroy (Wash.) High schools. She later moved to Troy and worked as a grocery clerk at The City Market for nearly 20 years. She later worked for the school district as a cook and a bus driver, retiring in 1968.
She moved to Juliaetta, Idaho, in 1975 before moving to Lewiston two years ago.
Mr. Swanson was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Juliaetta, the Nora Social Club and the Royal Neighbors.
She enjoyed camping and quilting and loved playing cards.
Mrs. Swanson had a ballpoint pen collection numbering almost 1,000.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, George, in 1980.
Survivors include a son, Cliff Swanson of Troy; one sister, Agnes Glenn of Lewiston; and granddaughter, Ara Swanson of Troy.

Ruth Schafer Ritzville, Wash.
Services for Ruth C. Schafer, 95, will be at 11 a.m today at Danekas Funeral Home Chapel. Concluding services and vault burial will follow at Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Schafer, who died Wednesday, was born in Spring Valley, Minn.
In 1918 her family moved to Great Falls, Mont., where she graduated from high school. After her mother died, the family moved to Spokane.
Mrs. Schafer received a teaching certificate from Cheney Normal College and moved to Adams County, where she taught for a year.
She married Henry Schafer in 1921 in Ritzville and they farmed in the Packard-Marcellus area until 1948, when they retired and moved into Ritzville.
Her husband died in 1982, and in 1990 Mrs. Schafer moved to Odessa, Wash., to be near her daughter. She had lived in the Odessa Convalescent Center for the past four years.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Burghard of Odessa; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Theresa DeSandre Spokane
Funeral Mass for Theresa S. DeSandre, 92, was Friday at St. Peter Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mrs. DeSandre, who died Wednesday, was born in Harrison, Idaho.
She had lived in Spokane since 1942 and worked at Geiger Field during World War II.
She had worked in the cafeteria at Sacred Heart Medical Center for 11 years and The Bon Marche for five years.
Mrs. DeSandre was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church.
Her husband, Joseph DeSandre, preceded her in death.
She is survived by one brother, John Sala of Colorado; and one sister, Madeline Fisher of Spokane.
Ida Tonn Ford, Wash.
Service for Ida J. Tonn, 65, is set for 10 a.m. today at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Ford. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Ford, Mrs. Tonn died Wednesday.
She had lived in Spokane and Ford and was a homemaker and a member of the Spokane Tribe of Indians.
She was a volunteer with legal services, Indian education and the housing authority on the Spokane Indian Reservation.
Mrs. Tonn is survived by three sons, Gene Bright of Tum Tum, Wash., and William and Gregory Bright, both of Spokane; four daughters, Cindy Weatherman of Spokane, Carolyn Lash, and Robin and Marcy Tonn, all of Ford, Wash.; one brother, Buzz Gutierrez of Ford; four sisters, Ann Ford and Cathy Hutchison, both of Ford, Sophie Stasso of Spokane and Jan Linthicum of Cheney; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Gerhard Riedesel Moscow, Idaho
Service for Gerhard A. Riedesel, 91, was held Wednesday in Moscow. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Riedesel, who was born in Ohio, died Sunday. He was raised in Rupert, Idaho, and attended Albion State Normal School.
He taught school in southern Idaho and attended the Idaho Technical Institute and Iowa State College. He worked for the Idaho Transportation Department, then was head of the University of Idaho engineering department and operated a professional engineering business in Moscow.
Mr. Riedesel worked as an appraiser engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers on the Columbia Basin and for the atomic energy agencies on the Hanford Project.
He also was employed by Washington State University before he retired in 1969.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Edna; two sons, Larry of Longview, Wash., and Dale of Twin Falls, Idaho; one foster son, Jim Chandler of Corvallis, Ore.; one sister, Miriam Hughes of New Jersey; one brother, Maurice Riedesel of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
