Sherman’s Blast Gains Whitworth Doubleheader Split

REPLAY: C2; March 28, 1996 Alex Schuerman hit the three-run homer that led the Whitworth baseball team to a 7-3 victory in a baseball game Tuesday. His last name was misspelled in Wednesday’s story and headline.

Alex Sherman’s three-run homer sparked Whitworth to a 7-3 win and a split with Eastern Oregon State College in a non-league double-header at Merkel Field on Tuesday.

EOSC rallied to score eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to post an 11-8 win in the opener.

In the first game, Whitworth took an 8-3 lead into the final inning, but a pair of EOSC homers helped push across eight runs.

Jeff Tygart (0-1), in relief of starter Sam Flemming, took the loss. Pat Fischer had three hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Pirates.

In the second game, Sherman had a three-run homer in the first and an RBI single in the fourth. Pitcher Ryan Stevens (2-1) went the distance, striking out six.

Rorholm wins Pro-Am

Mike Rorholm was 3-under on the backside to rally for a one-stroke win in the Athletic Roundtable Pro-Am golf series stop in Clarkston.

Rorholm, of Manito Country Club, finished at 2-under 70 to edge Clint Wallman of Birdies Golf Center. Dave Christenson of Indian Canyon was third with a 72.

Chad Gaffaney of Esmeralda won the 0-8 amateur division with a gross 72, edging Rob Robb of Avondale by one shot. Robb had a double-eagle on No. 11, holing a 9-wood from 205 yards.
