Davis Hires Coach, Lands Player

New University of Idaho men’s basketball coach Kermit Davis has landed an assistant coach and his first recruit.

The assistant coach is former Vandals forward Sammie Freeman, who played for Davis in 1989-90 and assisted him at Chipola (Fla.) Junior College.

The player is Centennial High School’s Jon Harris, who has given UI an oral commitment. The 6-foot-6 Harris led Centennial, located just outside of Boise, to the 1995 state championship and was named A-1 player of the year. He averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds this season. Centennial has been 46-6 the last two seasons.

Harris is expected to play small forward at Idaho.

Freeman, a 1993 Idaho graduate, started on Davis’ 25-6 team that won the Big Sky Conference and advanced to the NCAA tournament.

Freeman assisted at Southwest Texas State in 1994-95 and spent the past year as a sales representative for Converse.

“I would love for Sammie to come in and recruit guys just like himself,” Davis said. “He was a good student who graduated, was an outstanding player and was well received in the community.”
