Soccer Champs Open With A Victory
Ben Baxter scored an early goal, and his corner kick led to Mark Lupton’s winning header late in the match as defending champion Mead opened the Greater Spokane League boys soccer season Wednesday with a 2-1 win at Shadle Park.
Ryan Vane of the Highlanders scored midway through the second half on a 6-yard shot after beating a defender and Mead goalkeeper Rich Cullen. Shadle goalie Scott Peterson and Cullen had nine saves apiece.
In other openers, Lewis and Clark beat North Central 3-2 in overtime; University beat Ferris 3-2 after sudden death; and Central Valley topped Rogers 7-0.
At NC, the Tigers won the OT shootout 6-5. Colin Turnbull scored once and assisted on another goal when the Indians rallied from a 2-0 first-half deficit.
At U-Hi, Josh Melcher’s sudden death goal gave the win to the Titans after regulation and OT ended in ties. Ferris led regulation 2-0 before U-Hi rallied in the final 18 minutes. The OT ended in a 2-all tie.
At CV, six different players scored and the Bears outshot the Pirates 22-4.
Softball
Shortstop Devon Bakken singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third inning, and Jamie Fox (3-0) struck out three as University edged visiting Central Valley 2-1 in a Greater Spokane League game postponed from Friday.
CV (1-2) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with two out. Bakken fielded a grounder, collided with the baserunner from second, and the umpire ruled Bakken made a tag for the final out.
Colville’s Frontier League doubleheader at West Valley was postponed for a second time because of poor weather. The teams will attempt to play today.
Baseball
Catcher Brian Munhall went 3 for 5, scored three runs and added two RBIs as visiting Ferris beat Rogers 13-8 in the continuation of a Tuesday GSL game suspended by darkness.
Munhall also picked off two Pirates baserunners. The first six Ferris batters in the seventh reached on four errors and two walks.
