Shadle Overhauls Prep In 8

Gonzaga Prep piled up hits and early runs, but Shadle Park had the final say Friday in a key, early season Greater Spokane League baseball game.

The host Highlanders (3-0), trailing 5-1 after five innings, tied G-Prep (2-1) in the seventh, then used an outfield error in the eighth to mold a 6-5 win.

For Shadle, Jeff Lafferty had two hits and two runs batted in, and Sean Hughes (1-0) scattered 12 hits for a complete-game win. G-Prep’s Brendan Minallen had three hits and two RBIs.

Elsewhere, University beat Ferris 11-6, Mead lashed North Central 21-1 and Rogers topped Central Valley 13-9.

At Ferris, Rob Bartlett and Joe Jeffries went 3 for 4 and the first five batters of the game scored for the Titans (2-1).

Bartlett added three RBIs. Eric Sandberg of Ferris (1-1) was 2 for 4, including a 380-foot home run to left-center. The Saxons’ Dave Lavigne had two doubles. At Mead, Damian Long (1-0) allowed one hit, walked none and struck out nine in five innings, and John Barneson had four hits and four RBIs to lead the Panthers (2-0) over the Indians (0-3).

At Rogers, Joe Bailey and Brian Liberty were both 2 for 3 and combined for five runs, and the Pirates (1-2) stole nine bases to top the Bears (1-2).

Jamie Fox (4-0) struck out five, walked one and scattered three singles as University (4-0) remained tied for the league lead with a 3-0 win over visiting NC (3-2).

Fox also drove in the winning run, slapping a one-out single during a three-run fifth that began with Devon Bakken’s leadoff single.

At Rogers, Holly Vanwert (4-0) struck out six and added two hits and two RBIs as Mead (4-0) kept pace with U-Hi by toppling the Pirates 11-4.

At G-Prep, Katie Shrope (3-0) pitched a complete game and Kelly Jones had three hits as the Bullpups (4-1) edged Ferris 5-4.

At CV, Tori Mills (3-2) struck out eight and Crystal Lee had two doubles and three RBIs as the Bears (3-2) beat LC 8-1.

Frontier softball

Carrie Koker (2-0), Gabrielle McClintock and Darcy Sohns (2-0) checked visiting Riverside on six hits for a 14-2, 9-3 doubleheader sweep.

Koker pitched the first four innings of the opener and also finished 4 for 4 with a grand slam and seven RBIs. Sohns pitched a complete game and struck out 11 in the second game.

At Cheney, Wendy Stredwick’s fourth hit of the game drove in the winner in the 11th as East Valley edged the Blackhawks 6-5 to open a doubleheader. EV won the nightcap, 4-2, keyed by Rebecca Triplett’s run-scoring double in the seventh.
