And down the stretch they come. In Greater Spokane League baseball play on Tuesday, Gonzaga Prep beat University 4-3, Central Valley beat North Central 13-5, Ferris beat Lewis and Clark 12-9 and Mead edged Shadle Park 4-2.
G-Prep and CV are tied for first with 10-4 records with two games left. Ferris is 9-4, U-Hi and Mead 8-5, and Shadle Park 7-6, all with three games remaining.
At CV, the Bears earned their seventh straight victory. CV’s Raif Jochim hit a grand slam in the first inning and finished with six RBIs in the win over NC (4-10).
For Mead, Jim Geyer drove in the winning run against the host Highlanders with two outs in the top of the seventh. He eventually scored to add an insurance run.
At U-Hi, the visiting Bullpups scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh and hung on.
At LC (1-12), Eric Munhall’s grand slam in the top of the sixth gave Ferris a lead for good, at 8-6.
Softball
U-Hi’s Sally Jamison drove in Angel Whalen with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to provide the game-winning run for the first-place Titans in their 4-3 victory over visiting G-Prep.
U-Hi (11-2) received two hits each from Toshua Ballou, Jamie Fox, Whalen and Jamison. G-Prep is 9-5.
At Shadle, Mead (10-2) stayed a halfgame behind the Titans with an 18-0 drubbing of the Highlanders (1-11) Mead’s Ambre Miller had four hits, Holly Turner and Katrina Morton three each, and Holly Vanwert and Andrea Carnahan two each. Turner homered.
At Hart Field, Ferris’ Kylee Curry went 5 for 5 in the Saxons’ 9-2 win over LC (2-11). The game stayed close until Ferris (4-8) had a four-run seventh.
At CV, NC’s 2-0 win put both teams at 8-5 on the season. NC’s Shanelle Test struck out 15 and walked two, and she and teammate Denise Devereaux hit back-to-back run-scoring doubles.
