Yakima Bishop Transferred

Monsignor Francis E. George, who has been serving as bishop of Yakima the past six years, is the new archbishop of Portland, the Vatican announced Tuesday.

The post has been vacant since Archbishop William Levada was transferred by Pope John Paul II to San Francisco last August.

George, 59, born in Chicago, was ordained in 1963 and appointed bishop of Yakima in 1990.
