Moderate Earthquake Rattles West Side No Injuries Or Damage Reported In 5.4 Quake That Halted Mariners Game

Associated Press

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake rattled Western Washington on Thursday, the University of Washington Geophysics Center said.

The quake started at 9:04 p.m. and lasted about 30 seconds near the center. At least eight aftershocks followed, seismologist Bill Steele said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The earthquake’s center was near Duvall, about 20 miles northeast of Seattle, seismologist Seth Moran said.

The shaker halted the baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and the Cleveland Indians. The umpires and players for both teams left the field.

“We were really moving around in our seats down here,” said John Hale, a statistician in the press box of the Kingdome. “It was really shaking.”

Fans left the stadium as well, although several people remained in their seats and chanted for the game to resume.

There were reports the quake had been felt as far away as the Tri-Cities of Richland, Kennewick and Pasco in Eastern Washington, about 180 miles east of Seattle, and in British Columbia, 75 miles north of Seattle.

Moran said the quake was felt up and down the Interstate-5 corridor between Canada and Oregon.

In Olympia, 60 miles south of Seattle, the earthquake produced mild rattling and a low rumble for about 10 seconds.

A 911 supervisor in Seattle said there had been no reports of injuries or damage.
