Spokane Students Win Big At State Mesa Contest

Spokane-area middle school students won 29 of the 40 awards presented at the State Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) competition in Seattle. Competing in 10 events, Spokane students had seven of the 10 state championships and 25 of the 32 students placed.

MESA is a special minority based program sponsored by Washington state universities. It encourages students to use logic, hands-on, reasoning and engineering principals to solve mathematical and scientific problems.

Spokane’s 32 team members dominated the events attended by 142 students statewide.

The competition titles, students placing and their schools are:

Nine Man Morris: Mikaely Moore, Salk; Marty Sprayberry, Shaw; Isaac Solomon, Garry; and Missy Alake, Salk.

Pattern Blocks: Joy Chandler and Jennifer Harris, both of Salk; Adam Jelsing, Glover; and Jolein Cramer, Chase.

Pentominos: Dan Daulton and Erica Legrand both of Garry; Crystal Gable, Chase; and Kim Clark, Glover.

Spatial Visualization: Teresa Skanks and Lindsey McDonald, both of Glover.

Tangrams: Robin Henley, Salk; Nathaniel Eng, Sacajawea; John Smith, Shaw; and Kate Kimbel, Chase.

Airplane Accuracy: Nathaniel Eng, Sacajawea; and Titus Lucus, Shaw.

Airplane Hangtime: Tony Gonzales, Sacajawea.

Balloon Racers: John Norris and Jolein Cramer, both of Chase.

Egg Crate: Joe Boldt, Shaw; and Kate Kimble, Chase.

Marble Catapult: John Smith, Shaw; Bubba Herd, Sacajawea; Brittany Bartlett, Sacajawea; and Alison Arnold, Garry.

Jeff Mix, Spangle, has been named a United States National Award Winner in physical education.

Criteria for selection are a student’s academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, motivation to learn … Fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students achieve the honor.

Mix, a 1994 graduate of Liberty High School, attends Whitworth College where he plays basketball. He will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Collegiate Yearbook.

Ululani K. Jennings has been named Miss Airway Heights. Jennings, a sophomore at Cheney High School, is a cheerleader and the daughter of Robert and Henrietta Jennings.

Marine Cpl. Daniel Strassenburg, son of Arthur Strassenburg, Spokane, was promoted to his present rank while serving with station operations and maintenance squadron, Marine Corps Air, Yuma, Ariz. He joined the Marine Corps in 1994.
