Fast-Food Giant Takes Its Time Perfecting New Burger Mcdonald’s Spent Two Years Developing The Arch Deluxe

Associated Press

So much for fast food.

The Arch Deluxe, McDonald’s new adult burger, was two years in the making.

The sandwich consists of a quarter-pound of beef topped with American cheese, tomato, onion, ketchup and a Dijon mustard-mayonnaise sauce on a potato roll. Sweet hickory smoked pepper bacon is available on request.

How is McDonald’s billing the burger?

It’s a “made-for-me home cooked flavor,” said McDonald’s executive chef, Andrew Selvaggio.

Maybe. But Mom never spent two years cooking a meal going through what Selvaggio says was 500 different combinations.

Rolled out Thursday at Radio City Music Hall, the “McMoment” - as the company dubbed it - marked what McDonald’s claimed was the biggest product launch in its history.

“The potato roll is a complete departure to what’s out there in the quick-service restaurant industry,” Selvaggio said.

It’s also the secret to preserving the tomato and leaf lettuce on the burger - a task where McDonald’s efforts have wilted in the past.

“There’s a higher amount of moisture in the (potato) roll which attracts the heat and holds it away from the lettuce and tomato,” Selvaggio said. “Sort of like baked Alaska, how the meringue insulates the ice cream so it doesn’t melt.”

Does this mean there are more changes in store for the McDonald’s menu?

“I feel as chef and keeper of flavor and taste at McDonald’s, my role is to continually explore what would be the next fast-food craze,” Selvaggio said.
