Nc, CV Earn Regional Softball Berths
North Central and Central Valley secured berths in the regional playoffs at Franklin Park next week with wins in the Greater Spokane League District Softball Tournament on Thursday at Franklin Park.
In loser-out shutouts, NC beat Rogers 4-0 and CV edged Gonzaga Prep 1-0.
Two Rogers errors to start the game helped NC (12-5) take an early lead. Shanelle Test drove in the two runners with a single. Later in the inning, Julie Ann Cook drove in Janessa Karstens. Karstens threw a one-hitter to get the win.
In the win for CV (11-6), the Bears’ Tori Mills drove in pinch-runner Shannon Pierce in the bottom of the second inning for the game’s only run.
G-Prep (9-8) left the bases loaded in the third, and stranded runners at third base in the fourth, sixth and seventh.
NC will face Mead (12-4) today at 6 p.m. and CV will take on league champ University at (13-3) at 3:45 p.m.
Tennis
Top seeds Amy Fong of Mead, Leslie Whitten of U-Hi, Daniela Paperalla of Rogers and Kendra Leyda of G-Prep all advanced to the third round of the George Gee Pontiac District 8 Tournament.
Fong and Whitten had byes in the first round. Paparella beat CV’s Kelly Erikson 6-1, 6-1. Leyda beat NC’s Tsuei-Lan 6-2, 6-2.
In the second round, Fong beat NC’s Vickie Overfield 6-0, 6-0; Whitten beat Tammy Jones of Rogers 6-0, 6-0; Paparella beat Jenny Schiffner of Mead 6-3, 6-1; and Leyda beat U-Hi’s Meliss Gordon 6-2, 6-2.
Play resumes today at Hart Field at 2:30 p.m.
In boys singles action, Mead’s Ryan Moran, Lewis and Clark’s Brandon Balle, Shadle’s Dan Fennan and G-Prep’s Riggs Kubiak all advanced to the third round.
Not one of those top four seeds lost a set. Today’s matches start at 2:30 p.m. at Ferris.
Track
In Frontier League boys track, West Valley defeated Cheney 98-52 and Colville 118-25 to earn the league championship with a undefeated season.
WV’s Clayton Holmes finished first in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 2.6 seconds. He also won the 1,600 in 4:41.97.
Cheney’s Chad Randall won the 100 in 11.7, the 200 in 23.5 and the 400 in 51.4.
At Clarkston, the Bantams edged Pullman 72-71.
Pullman’s Ricardo Colon won the 100 in 10.6. He also won the long jump at 21 feet, 6 inches.
For the league, district preliminaries start Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Eastern Washington’s Woodward Field, and the finals will be held at that site at 2 p.m.
WV’s girls also completed an undefeated season, beating Colville 106-33 and Cheney 96-37. Cheney beat Colville, 64-53. And at Clarkston, the Bantams beat Pullman 87-53.
Baseball
In the District 7-B Tournament, Odessa eliminated Curlew 17-9 and Northport eliminated Ritzville 8-7.
In quarterfinals, Wilbur-Creston beat Odessa 7-6 and Republic beat Northport 5-1.
Pat Hays’ solo homer in the bottom of the seventh gave W-C the win. The Wildcats hit three homers against Odessa.
W-C advances to play Northwest Christian, the Panorama League’s No. 1 seed, at 1 p.m. on Monday at East Valley.
Following that game, Odessa will face Northport with the winner to go to state as the No. 5 seed.
Also on Monday, at 1 p.m. at WV, Davenport (Bi-County No. 1) will play Republic.
At 4 p.m., the W-C/NWC loser will play the Davenport/Republic loser for the third and fourth seeds to state.
The winners will play the championship game at Seafirst Stadium at 4 p.m.
Golf
In a sub-district qualifier match, Ritzville’s Ryan Benzel shot a 70 in his hometown to qualify as the Bi-County League’s top boys placer to the District 7-9 Bi-County tournament at Hangman Valley on Monday.
Also on the par-70 course, Jamie Colson of Asotin shot a 78, Ray Hattrup of Harrington a 79, and John Stoner of St. John-Endicott and Josh Johnstone of Ritzville each shot 80.
In team play, SJE edged Ritzville by three strokes, 432-435.
Kari Martin of Clarkston shot an opening-round 85 at The Fairways to take the lead of the Frontier League district girls tournament.
On the par-72 course, Martin’s round put her eight shots ahead of Cheney’s Sara Niccolls (93). Pullman’s Kristin Burritt and Colville’s Stephanie Vaagen each shot 98.
The second round will be held at the Clarkston Country Club on Wednesday. The top seven finishers go to state.
