Vietnamese Riot Over Forced Return
Police used tear gas against defiant Vietnamese at a Hong Kong detention center Saturday, the second day of a violent revolt against forced return to Vietnam.
Calls mounted for tough government action against the rioters, who torched buildings and cars, toppled fences and fought running battles with police Friday during some of the worst violence ever in Hong Kong’s camps.
Scores of Vietnamese - some waving banners marked “SOS” climbed on dormitory roofs at the Whitehead detention center Saturday to protest Hong Kong’s policy of deporting asylum-seekers to Vietnam.
On a dorm roof, they daubed the words: “Fighting to the end for freedom and democracy.”
