Gsl Baseball To Double Up

Monday’s George Gee Pontiac District 8 high school baseball playoff game at Seafirst Stadium between Mead and Central Valley was postponed because of wet conditions.

The winner-to-state game, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been rescheduled for today at 1 p.m. at Seafirst Stadium.

The winner plays Greater Spokane League champion Ferris at 3:45 for seeding to the regional tournament, which is Saturday at Seafirst Stadium.

If Seafirst is unusable today, Rogers or University high school will be looked at as an alternate site.

Tyson Deal pitched a no-hitter, striking out five while only walking one, as Davenport beat Republic 6-0 in the Bi-County Tournament.

Deal was also 2 for 3 at the plate and Steve Cannon was 2 for 2 with two RBI for the Gorillas.

Republic also lost to Wilbur-Creston, 7-4, as the Wildcats got homers from Bob Messer and Adam Denney.

In a loser-out game, Northport eliminated Odessa 6-1 behind a three-RBI double by Aaron Day.

Softball

Julie Compton pitched a complete game and had three hits as Reardan beat Almira/Coulee-Hartline 21-3 to capture the No. 1 seed from the BiCounty to the district tournament. ACH is the No. 2 seed.

Golf

Shaun Murray of West Valley followed up a first-round 73 with a 76 in the second round to capture the District 7 AA tournament at the University of Idaho by five strokes.

Doug McClure of Clarkston was second with a two-day total of 154, followed by Tim Ressa of Pullman at 156. The top seven advance to state.

Joey Bristol of Chewelah fired a 75 to win the District 7 A-B tournament at Hangman Valley by three strokes and qualify for state.

Ritzville’s Ryan Benzel was second followed by Darren Flyckt of Chewelah in third, one stroke back. Sixteen boys qualified for state.

On the girls side, Ritzville grabbed the top four spots, led by Angela Gibler with an 87. Emily Ulleland and Marci Kison tied for second with 93s. Nine girls qualified for state.

Megan Field from CC Spokane carded an 11-over-par 83 to win the NWAACC Region Tournament at Indian Canyon. The Sasquatch women also took the team title, outdueling Walla Walla 195-213.

Steve Schupe of Columbia Basin won the men’s division with a 9-under 63. Brian Boyes was the highest CC Spokane finisher with a 74. CBC also claimed the team championship, beating CC Spokane 282-303.

Skaife released

Popular Spokane area basketball player and coach Jerry Skaife was released from Sacred Heart Medical Center on Monday morning.

Skaife, 52, who is also softball coach at Community Colleges of Spokane, suffered a heart attack two weeks ago tonight while playing rec league basketball.

Track and field

University of Idaho redshirt javelin thrower Jill Wimer of Grangeville, Idaho, has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June.

Wimer won the event at the Whitworth Invitational this past weekend with a personal-best throw of 174 feet, 6 inches. Her previous best was 160-5 thrown two weeks ago.

Wimer’s throw ranks in the top 10 in the nation according to the latest list in Track and Field News.

Basketball

Idaho men’s basketball coach Kermit Davis announced that Kevin Byrne, a 6-foot-9 forward from North Idaho College, has signed a national letter of intent to attend UI this fall.

Byrne, who played just one year at NIC, is a native of Costa Mesa, Calif.

“Rollie (Williams, recently retired NIC coach) has had a lot of great inside players in his program and he believes (Bryne) could be another one of those,” said Davis. “He has three years left to play and he’s a great student.”

Byrne, the sixth new player Davis has signed, averaged 6.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, shot 61 percent from the field, 70 percent from the free-throw line.
