Higher Microsoft Shipments Expected
Microsoft Corp. will enjoy a jump in shipments of its Windows 95 and Windows NT operating software as companies upgrade their computers, market researcher Dataquest Inc. said Wednesday.
The two programs will be the only operating systems to gain market share this year. While Apple Computer Inc.’s Macintosh OS will rise in shipments, its share will continue to drop, Dataquest said.
Last summer Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., released Windows 95, a major revision of its Windows program, among much fanfare. It shipped 18.8 million copies by the end of the year.
But shipments should pick up in 1996, according to Dataquest, which predicted 62.7 million in Windows 95 shipments this year. Shipments of Microsoft’s Windows NT, a heavy-duty operating system intended primarily for business, will rise even more sharply, from 2.2 million in 1995 to 8 million this year.
