Hillyard Postcard, Mural To Be Dedicated
Tom Quinn’s public mural on the outside of the Hillyard Post Office will be dedicated next week along with a limited-edition postcard.
The mural at the corner of Olympic and Greene depicts Hillyard residents in the early 1920s waiting for a train to arrive at the depot. It is Quinn’s second mural in Hillyard and was painted for $1,600.
A third mural is in progress. It will depict an early storefront on the wall of the American Armoured Pawn Shop Building on Market Street.
The murals are a project of the Greater Hillyard Business Association. The post office mural was underwritten by the Spokane Railway Credit Union and the Spokane postmaster.
The commemorative 4-by-6-inch postcards depict a picture of the laying of the cornerstone of the Hillyard Post Office in 1946 and a reproduction of the newspaper article about the event.
Proceeds from the $2 price will go to fund other murals around Hillyard. Only 300 postcards will be sold.
A special pictorial cancellation will also be available for 30 days, said Kathy Hamilton, customer relations officer with the Spokane postmaster.
The post office already has received requests from collectors for the cancellation.
“Because it’s so limited, we’ve already had many requests come in by mail for the cancellation,” she said. The cancellation is a line drawing of the mural and can be issued on any stamp and used as postage for 30 days.
Both stamp collectors and train buffs make it in demand.
“It makes it very special, never to be done again,” she said.
