Ferris High’s Science Team Headed For National Contest
FOR THE RECORD (Saturday, May 18, 1996): Ferris High School’s science team took second place at the Washington State Science Olympiad held at Everett Community College.
After winning the Washington State Science Olympiad last month at Everett Community College, the Ferris High School’s team of science students leaves Saturday for Atlanta, Ga., and the national competition.
In the state competition, Ferris scored 391 points out of a possible 400. The Saxton’s team brought home six gold, two silver, six bronze and four fourth-place medals.
Team members are: Ryan Bentz, Andrew Brick, Anne Cain, Ryan Cassidy, Shannon George, Kevin Koller, Amanda Lehman, Jessica Noralski, Miranda Peterson, Michael Ross, Scott Siera and Marcie Tiffany. Their instructor is Cinda Parton.
Stephanie McCathern, daughter of Kevin and Grace McCathern, Spokane, has been named to the University of Oregon’s Athletic Honor Roll. The 1995 graduate of University High School is a member of Oregon’s women’s volleyball.
Kevin Kittilstved, son of John and Nancy Kittilstved, Spokane, is listed in “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.”
The Shadle Park High School junior is a member of the National Honor Society, high honor roll, Letterman’s Club and the varsity football team.
Dale A. Beick, Spokane, has had a poem published in “A Voyage to Remember,” a book of poetry compiled by the National Library of Poetry. The poem is entitled “Shadows in the Mirror.”
Colleen Kelly has received a $2,000 Reid Lab School Scholarship from Eastern Washington University, where she is a graduate student.
Kelly, majoring in instructional media and technology, earned her B.A. in elementary education from Pacific Lutheran University in 1991.
The 1986 graduate of Mead High School is the daughter of Kathleen and Edward Kelly.
Nico Harrison, a forward for Montana State University’s basketball team, is a finalist for the NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Harrison, a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America third teamer, is the District VII nominee for the grant. Of nine states and two Canadian provinces, only five college basketball players are named to the team.
He is also a finalist for postgraduate grants from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the NCAA Ethnic Minority Scholarship and a nominee for the Arthur Ashe Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.
He is the son of Steve Harrison, Spokane, and Christie Smith, Tigard, Ore.
