Nilsson Caps Brewers’ Big Inning

Dave Nilsson became the first player in Milwaukee Brewers history and the 29th player overall to hit two homers in the same inning, driving in four runs during an 11-run sixth Friday night in a 12-1 win over the Minnesota Twins in Milwaukee.
Nilsson, who had just one homer this season, snapped a 1-1 tie with a homer off Jose Parra (1-2) leading off the sixth. Nilsson then hit a three-run drive off Erik Bennett for a 10-1 lead later in the inning.

Harold Baines hit a three-run homer in the top of the 10th and drove in five runs as Chicago beat Detroit.

Paul O’Neill’s three-run homer capped a five-run fifth that was kept alive by a controversial call in New York’s win over California.
Gerald Williams was ruled safe at first base by umpire John Hirschbeck after grounding into a force play. Angels starter Jim Abbott (1-6) and his infielder teammates argued the call, which would have given them two outs had it gone in their favor. TV replays indicated their argument was valid.

Cleveland
Manny Ramirez’s grand slam capped a six-run seventh as Cleveland overcame a seven-run deficit to beat Texas.

Tim Belcher shut down Toronto until giving up consecutive homers in the ninth and Bip Roberts had a two-run single in Kansas City’s win.
Red Sox 5, Athletics 3 (11)
Boston
Wil Cordero hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 11th, giving Boston a win over Oakland.
Cordero doubled and scored in the eighth, tying the game at 3-3, but Jose Canseco struck out with two runners on base to end the inning.
Clearing the bases
Kansas City shortstop David Howard was a late scratch from the lineup with a sore Achilles’ tendon. … The mother of Royals third baseman Joe Randa was killed in a Wisconsin auto accident. Authorities in Waukesha County, Wis., said Donna Lexa, 52, was killed Thursday night when her car was struck from behind and pushed into the path of oncoming traffic.
The Red Sox have homered in seven consecutive games. … Right-hander John Farrell, obtained by Detroit in a minor league trade with Cleveland on Tuesday, will start today for the Tigers against the White Sox. It is Farrell’s first major league start since May 30, 1994. … California claimed left-handed pitcher Brad Pennington on waivers from Boston. Pennington, 27, was 0-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings over 14 games with the Red Sox this season.
