Ewu Students Receive Minority Scholarships
Three Inland Northwest students attending Eastern Washington University have received $1,000 ethnic minority scholarships.
Barbara Prentice Sagerser, an EWU graduate student in psychology, graduated magna cum laude last June and received a Mary Shields Wilson Award.
Sagerser, daughter of Carol and Charles Prentice and a 1991 Cheney High School graduate, is a member of the Native American Student Association, Catholic Newman Center and the honor societies of Psi Chi, Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi.
Kelli Jo Ross, a sophomore majoring in human biology, is a member of Phi Eta Sigma honor society and was named to the Dean’s List. She is the daughter of Bernie Ross and Lanny Ross, both of Spokane. She is a 1994 graduate of Mead High School.
Melanie Lund, a junior majoring in Spanish and secondary education major, is an Eagle Ambassador, a peer tutor and a volunteer in elementary reading.
She is a 1993 graduate of Reardan High School and the daughter of Charlene Lund and Martin Lund.
Several Inland Northwest students have received $2,000 trustees scholarships at Eastern Washington University for the current academic year: Christy Dodge, a 1994 graduate of Colville (Wash.) High School, is the daughter of Cindy and Greg Dodge, Colville. She is a sophomore premed major.
Forest Greenough, a 1994 graduate of Colville High School, is the son of Debbie Brozik and Steve Greenough, both of Colville. The sophomore music/physics major is a member of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity.
Janine DePaulo, a 1994 graduate of Kettle Falls (Wash.) High School, is a sophomore English major. The daughter of Cheryl and Joseph DePaulo, Kettle Falls, she is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma freshman honor society and the EWU Honors Program.
Eric Dotson, a 1994 graduate of Shadle Park High School, is the son of Patricia and Charles Dotson, Spokane. The sophomore is a member of the symphonic and chamber choirs.
Jessica Harnish, a 1994 graduate of East Valley High School, is the son of Judy Tuxford and Dennis Harnish, both of Spokane. A sophomore premed major, she is a member of EWU’s wind ensemble, symphonic, marching and pep bands and a participant in the EWU Honors Program.
David Volland, a 1994 graduate of East Valley High School, is the son of Karen Volland, Spokane, and Gene Volland, Veradale. He is a sophomore mathematics major and a member of the orchestra and band at Eastern.
Tyler Matney has won a Nestle USA Inc. scholarship and will spend six weeks this summer in Switzerland.
Matney, a sophomore at Newport (Wash.) High School and son of Greg and Jan Matney, was one of six high school students chosen nationally to participate in the European home-stay program administered by the Youth for Understanding International Exchange of Washington, D.C.
Flannery M. Higgins, Spokane, was elected president of the Mary Low Commons at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, for the 1996-97 academic year.
Higgins, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the daughter of Shaun and Ann Higgins, Spokane.
Three members of the Girl Scouts’ Inland Empire Council, have received their religious recognition awards: Amanda Apodaca, Brownie Girl Scout Troop 62, received the Family of God award at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church. Vaness Apodaca and Jill Burgard, both in Junior Girl Scout Troop 78, received the I Live My Faith award at St. John Vianney’s.
