Magdalena Maleeva upset the world’s No. 3 player, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals of the Madrid Open in Spain.

In today’s final, Maleeva will play Jana Novotna, who advanced after Monica Seles withdrew because of a nagging shoulder injury.

Pete Sampras’ path to the French Open title is packed with former champions after the draw was made.

The top-seeded Sampras could face four French Open winners in this year’s tournament, which begins Monday at Roland Garros in Paris.

A potential third-round obstacle for Sampras is Mats Wilander, a three-time French winner. Another possible foe is Gilbert Schaller of Austria, who beat Sampras in the first round last year.
