Interlake’s German Breaks Mark With 16-Foot Pole Vault
Interlake’s Erik German cleared 16 feet in the pole vault to break the 24-year-old meet record Friday in Star Track XIV, the state high school Class AAA and AA track and field championships Friday in Tacoma.
German, a senior, bettered the record of 15-5-3/4 set in 1972 by Rick Baggett of Pasco and Judd Eddy of Ferris.
One other meet record fell during the opening 25 final events at Lincoln Bowl. Ellensburg junior JaWarren Hooker won the boys’ AA 100-meter dash in 10.69 seconds, breaking the old mark of 10.74 set by Ron Jackson of Franklin in 1980.
It was a repeat victory for Hooker.

In the team scoring, two-time defending champion Mead led Spanaway Lake 30-25 in the boys’ AAA competition. The Mead girls led Garfield 27-18. Defending champ O’Dea was the boys’ AA team leader 24-19 over Lynnwood. And Ellensburg led Peninsula 23-20 in AA girls’ scoring.
