Short-Handed Shadow Prevails
Sometimes less is more.
The Spokane Shadow used that philosophy Saturday night in defeating the Jackson, Miss., Chargers 4-3 in a USISL soccer match at Spokane Falls Community College.
With the score tied 3-3 and Spokane playing short-handed because of a red card given to midfielder Kieran Barton, Jim Martinson scored the game-winner with 4 minutes remaining. Martinson beat a Chargers defender and blasted a shot past Jackson goalie Alfredo Estrada.

Washington State University’s three automatic qualifiers - Dominique Arnold, Leo Slack, and Francesca Green - will be participating in the 1996 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., May 29-June 1, the meet organizing committee confirmed.
WSU’s highest-ranking provisional qualifier, freshman discus thrower Ian Waltz of Post Falls, Idaho, did not make the final list of men’s competitors. Waltz’s best throw of 189-7 was tied for 20th-best in the nation and only 16 competitors were expected to be invited.

The Washington State University women’s Varsity Eight and Junior Varsity Eight boats will row against Washington for Pacific-10 championships today at the conference championship regatta in Redwood Shores, Calif.
WSU’s Varsity Eight defeated UCLA by 17 seconds in the first round. The Cougar women then defeated Stanford in the semifinals to move into the championship.
The Cougar Junior Varsity Eight had a first-round bye and then soundly defeated Oregon State by 28 seconds in the semifinals.
