Aluminum Contracts Set To Expire

From Staff And Wire Reports

Aluminum Co. of America and Reynolds Metals Co. said they will continue contract negotiations with unions representing 16,560 workers as a midnight Friday deadline nears.

Each of the aluminum producers’ three-year contracts with the United Steelworkers of America and the Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers International Union expire at midnight tomorrow. The two unions represent workers at 19 Reynolds Metals plants and 11 Alcoa plants.

“We’re all hopeful and we’re still talking,” said ABG President Ernie LaBaff. “It’s not unusual for the talks to go down to the wire.”

The companies and unions began contract talks May 20 in Buffalo, N.Y. USW spokesman Charles Robideau said the union doesn’t expect to make any announcement until “near the deadline.”

The ABG represents about 6,550 workers at six Alcoa plants and 4,740 workers at nine Reynolds Metals plants. The USW has 3,690 workers at five Alcoa plants and 1,580 workers at 10 Reynolds Metals plants.
