Local Ewu Students Receive Merit Scholarships
Brandie Silva, Medical Lake, and Hang Quan, Spokane, freshmen at Eastern Washington University, have received $1,500 Asian American Academic Merit Scholarships.
Silva, daughter of Lupe and Clyde Silva, is a business major. She is a 1995 graduate of Medical Lake High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, student council and Multicultural Student Union.
Quan, a computer science major, is the son of Chi and Kam Quan. A 1995 graduate of University High School, he was a member of the National Honor Society and the Children of Colour Club.
Joyce E. Kellberg, Spokane, had her poem, “I Can’t Count the Number,” published in the book “Shadows and Light,” a book of poetry compiled by the National Library of Poetry.
Kristi Rennebohm Franz, a first- and second-grade teacher and technology coordinator at Pullman’s Sunnyside Elementary, has received a $500 Washington School Boards’ Educational Foundation Professional Development Scholarship.
Franz will use the scholarship to attend and present a paper at the International Education and Resource Network Teacher’s Technology Conference in Budapest, Hungary.
Cheney Middle School’s four-person team took first place in the Third Symposium for Environment and Education in Concord, N.H. The topic was what to do with loose-fill packaging.
Team members are Sandy Campbell, Trisha Sagerser, Bryan Sawyer and Matt Thompson.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Third Class Jamie M. Devitt has received the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for making a significant contribution to the command’s mission in New London, Conn.
Devitt, daughter of Judy D. Miller, Newman Lake, joined the Coast Guard in 1987.
Dan Robbins, of Tony Roma’s Restaurant, received a plaque celebrating 15 years of service on the Spokane Business Advisory Council for Inland Northwest Jobs Project.
A former BAC chairman, Robbins has been associated with Projects with Industry since 1980, and is a longtime member of the Local Restaurant Organization.
Spokane Transit Authority presented awards to employees recognized for 20 years of safe service in fixed route bus driving: Michael Lopane, Robert Palmer, Jeff Scott, Richard Callaghan, Bill Chinault, Gene Krings, Pat Mourin, Scott Whiting, Don Eastwood, Jim McGrath, Don Mishler, Ed Raney, J.J. O’Connell and Pat Kane.
In Para-transit, Leo Tomayko was the top award winner with 13 years of safe service. Mike Lyon, building maintenance, received the top award for 11 years of safe service. John McKeirnan, Mike Kneff, James Norcross and John Moore were also recognized for their outstanding safe service in maintenance.
