Heisman watch

Danny Wuerrfel, quarterback of No. 1 Florida, continues to be the favorite in a race that never really developed. Wuerffel, who played only one possession in the second half, was 16 of 23 for 279 yards in the Gators’ win over Georgia. He now has 9,539 career passing yards, topping the school mark of 9,260 held by Shane Matthews.

Iowa State’s Troy Davis, continues to run extremely well for a very weak Cyclones team. The nation’s leading rusher, he carried 33 times for 171 yards and one touchdown in a loss to Kansas.

Notable

A.J. Pitorino, Hartwick, rushed for an NCAA all-divisions record 443 yards on 45 carries in a 42-14 win over Waynesburg.

Koy Detmer, Colorado, passed for a school-record 457 yards and three long TDs in the Buffaloes’ win over Missouri.

Leon Johnson, North Carolina, scored four touchdowns and Chris Keldorf set a school-record for TD passes with his 19th in the Tar Heels’ win over North Carolina State.

Ron Dayne, Wisconsin, set a school freshman record with 244 rushing yards as the Badgers ended a four-game losing streak by beating Purdue.

June Henley, Kansas, returned from a one-game suspension to run for a season-high 226 yards and three TDs against Iowa State.

Reginal Johnson, New Mexico, rushed for 232 yards and all five Lobos touchdowns in their win over Tulsa.

Columbia, looking for its best start in 64 years, was upset by Princeton 14-11. The Lions (6-1) had not opened 7-0 since 1932 and hadn’t won seven straight since 1934-35.

Wyoming extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 12 games, beating Southern Methodist 59-17.

Notre Dame set an NCAA record for opponent domination by defeating Navy for the 33rd time in a row.

Syracuse blocked two punts, its fifth and sixth blocks of the season, and returned another punt 72 yards for a score in a 30-7 victory over West Virginia.

Scott Dreisbach threw four TD passes against Michigan State, becoming the first Michigan quarterback to do so against the Spartans.

Tremain Mack, who saved Miami last week with a blocked punt returned for a score against West Virginia, blocked a field-goal attempt that was returned for a TD and had 205 kickoff return yards in the Hurricanes’ win over Temple.

Quotable
