Saudi King Urges Prayers For Rain

Compiled From Wire Services

Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd urged citizen in this oil-rich desert kingdom to pray for badly needed rain, the Arab News reported Saturday.

Fahd asked Saudis nationwide to offer the prayers on Monday because the rains that usually come by mid-October have not started.

The kingdom gets an annual rainfall of about 6 inches from sporadic winter rains that are important for drinking water supplies and agriculture. Although vast tracts of the country are empty desert, the government has encouraged some farming of wheat and vegetables to cut reliance on imports.

According to custom, Saudi men gather at mosques just after dusk to offer special prayers for rain. Women pray at home.
