Guide Kills Grizzly Attacking Woman

Associated Press

A guide shot and killed a female grizzly Friday after the bear attacked a South Dakota woman who was hunting north of Yellowstone National Park.

Joe Hymer was guiding hunters Maurice and Sonya Crowley near Corwin Springs when they stumbled upon the bear and her two cubs, said Church Universal and Triumphant spokesman Murray Steinman.

“I don’t know if they surprised the bear, or what happened,” Steinman said. “(The bear) started to drag her off and Joe grabbed her gun and killed the bear,” he said.

Hymer was bitten in the leg trying to save Sonya Crowley, he said.

Steinman said Sonya Crowley suffered severe bites on the left side of her face and body, some going down to the bone.
