G-Prep, Central Valley Lose In State Playoffs

The road was unkind to the Greater Spokane League in the qualifying round of the State AAA football playoffs Tuesday night.

Walla Walla pummeled Gonzaga Prep 48-20 at Borleske Stadium and No. 1 Kamiakin defeated Central Valley 24-14 at Lampson Stadium in Kennewick.

Kamiakin (10-0) opened a quick 14-0 lead but the Bears (6-4) are able to keep within striking distance.

Chad Adamson passed for 116 yards for CV but was picked off twice and Tyree Clowe ran for 175 yards.

Walla Walla (8-1) jumped on the Bullpups (5-5) early with Kyle Holman, the Big Nine’s leading rusher, scoring on a 3-yard run. However, he broke his finger in that opening drive and never returned.

The Blue Devils never missed him.

Curtis Coronado carried the ball 26 times for 147 yards, sandwiching touchdown runs of 2 and 1 yards around Tyson Thielman’s 3-yard run for Prep.

The Blue Devils made it 28-7 at halftime and after quarterback Kevin O’Connell scampered 23 yards for the Bullpups opening score of the second half, Walla Walla reeled off two more touchdowns to put the game out of reach.

O’Connell kept the ball 11 times for 98 yards and hit 10 of 18 passes for 189. Ryan Turner made seven catches for 152 yards. Thielman was held to 55 yards on 15 carries.

Jared Jones, who capped the first half with a 2-yard scoring run and the game with a 2-yard TD pass to Coronado, made the running game more effective by hitting 7 of 9 passes for 98 yards.
