Obituaries

Mayme Johnson Spokane

Service for Mayme Johnson, 95, will be today at 1 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson, who was born in Cataldo, Idaho, died Friday.

She lived and farmed in Cataldo before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1957. She moved to Spokane in 1980.

She was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Senior Center and the Grandmothers Club.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Victor, in 1969.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen Hamel of Coeur d’Alene, and Mabel Meeks and Ruth Doyle, both of Spokane; eight grandchildren, Carol, James, Phillip, Marie, Kathleen, Daniel, Lisa and Mary Ann; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth Hammond Spokane

Visitation for Ruth A. Hammond, 87, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hammond, who died Sunday, was born in Carlton, Minn. She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 17 years.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary and was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Two husbands preceded her in death, Frank Lewis and Wayne Hammond.

She is survived by a son, Andrew Lewis of Seattle; a stepson, Jim Hammond of Spokane; a stepdaughter, Barbara Thompson of Redding, Calif.; a sister, Helen Lawson of Athol, Idaho; a brother Jack Holmes of Rogue River, Ore.; four grandchildren and several stepgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Edward Pfeiffer Colville, Wash.

Service for Edward S. Pfeiffer, 73, will be at 10 a.m. today at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville. Graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Pfeiffer, a former meat department manager for Safeway stores in Spokane and Colville, died Thursday.

He was born in Northport, Wash., and had lived in Spokane before he moved to Colville 15 years ago.

Mr. Pfeiffer is survived by two daughters, Andrea Furber and Lynn Pfeiffer, both of Portland; a sister, Freda Weaver of Colville; and two brothers, Bill Pfeiffer of Colville and Fred Pfeiffer of Spokane.

Louis Baker Spokane

Visitation for Louis W. Baker, 89, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeSouth. Service is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Baker, who died Sunday, was born in Cass Lake, Minn.

He moved to Spokane 60 years ago and worked for the city for 26 years. He retired in 1970 as superintendent of alarms. He had previously worked for the Great Northern Railway and as a meat cutter.

Mr. Baker was a member of Manito Lions Club and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice Baker; a sister, Leah Ruth of Libby, Mont.; and four brothers, Victor Baker of Kalispell, Mont., and Benjamin, Burton and Percy Baker, all of Libby, Mont.

Herbert Hult Spokane

Memorial service for Herbert H. Hult, 94, is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mr. Hult, who died Saturday, was born in Minnesota and had been a Spokane resident since 1942.

He worked for the Spokane Chronicle as a printer from 1942 to 1967 and was a member of the Spokane Typographical Union No. 193 and the Eagles Lodge No. 2.

Mr. Hult is survived by his wife Gertrude Hult; a daughter, Dorothy Jimeson of Winston, Ore.; and a grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Morris Riblett Medical Lake

Service for Morris E. Riblett, 79, was Tuesday at Lake City Assembly of God Church in Medical Lake. Burial was at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Born in Gem, Kan., Mr. Riblett died Thursday.

He had lived in Medical Lake for 28 years and worked as a custodian at Eastern Washington University before retiring in 1982.

Mr. Riblett was a member of Lake City Assembly of God Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Medical Lake Golden Agers Club.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Riblett; two sons, Eldon and Doyle Riblett, both of Boise; a stepdaughter, Rosemary Barnhart of Medical Lake; two sisters, Tryla Allen and Rose Evans, both of Boise; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Florence Harvey Spokane

Graveside service for Florence J. Harvey, a former longtime resident of the Rosalia-Thornton, Wash., area, will be at 2 p.m. today at Oakesdale (Wash.) Cemetery. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Rosalia is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harvey, 100, died Sunday.

She was born in Spring Valley, Wash.

She was a past member of the Shadle Park Presbyterian Church, Rosalia Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, Loyal Neighbors of Thornton and the World War I Auxiliary.

Her husband, Reuben Harvey, died in 1969.

She is survived by two sons, Keith Harvey of Spokane and Robert Harvey of Acton, Calif.; three daughters, Phyllis Muck of Scotia, N.Y., Joanne Jarnigan of Kent, Wash., and Floy Timms of Petaluma, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shadle Park Presbyterian Church.

Walter Miller Spokane

Memorial service for Walter R. Miller, 90, is set for 3 p.m. Thursday at Lincoln Heights Congregational Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Miller, a 53-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He was born in Mooreland, Okla.

He worked as a carpenter and was a former member of Carpenters Union Local No. 98.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lois Miller; three sons, Wayne, Gary and Walter Miller Jr.; eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Mary ‘Polly’ Schoeff Reno, Nev.

Service for Mary Eleanor “Polly” Schoeff, a former Dusty, Wash., resident, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Country Bible Church near Dusty.

Mrs. Schoeff, 82, died Saturday.

She was born in Monticello, Ark.

She briefly taught school and in the early 1940s served as head of civilian personnel at Palm Springs Air Base in California.

She married Donald Schoeff in 1945 and they lived on a wheat farm near LaCrosse, Wash., and Dusty for more than 34 years.

Her husband died in 1982.

Mrs. Schoeff had lived Nevada for five years.

She is survived by a son, John Schoeff of Cheney; a daughter, Suzanne Murray of Winnemucca, Nev.; two sisters, Marnelle Robertson of Arkansas and Lelia Ann Dalton of Arizona; and six grandchildren.

Marion Sampson Spokane

No service will be held for Marion Julia Sampson, 86, at her request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sampson, who died Oct. 31, was born in Cheney and was a longtime Spokane resident.

She was a teacher in Central and Western Washington, and taught in Spokane from 1929 to 1974.

Her husband of 36 years, Clarence Sampson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Marjory Nellis of Yakima and Barbara Mihalehean of Spokane; a son, Robert Sampson of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

E.V. ‘Swede’ Frederick Coeur d’Alene

Private memorial service for E.V. “Swede” Frederick, 86, will be held later. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Frederick, who was born in North Dakota, died Thursday.

He moved to Spokane in 1934 and worked for Sears, Roebuck and Co. for 15 years. He purchased the Dairy Delite Drive-In in Coeur d’Alene in 1954 and operated it until moving to Pasco in 1972.

Mr. Frederick operated several restaurants in the Pasco and Spokane areas before retiring in 1977. He then returned to Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Marie; a son, Alan “Joe” Frederick of Spokane; three daughters, Betty Mills and Diane Tuntland, both of Coeur d’Alene, and Hazel Muller of Oregon; two brothers, D.L. “Dutch” Frederick of Oregon and Vick Frederick of Kennewick; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Cliff Singer Coeur d’Alene

Service for Cliff Singer, 71, will be held later. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Singer, who was born in North Dakota, died Friday.

He lived in North Dakota and Montana and moved to Rathdrum, Idaho, in 1945. He had worked at Kaiser Aluminum for 15 years, then worked at Finnaman Farms until retiring.

Mr. Singer was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include two sons, Clifford “Butch” Singer and Raymond Singer, both of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Kim Standridge of Rathdrum; five brothers, Ray, Herb and Lorenz “Hunts” Singer, all of Rathdrum, Ben Singer of Coeur d’Alene and Walt Singer of Post Falls; five sisters, Willie Paul of Tacoma, Berny Berglund of Coeur d’Alene, Nora Nelson of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Carol Kenna of Post Falls and Darlene Smith of Spokane; and nine grandchildren.
