Wwp Donates To Scope Groups

Washington Water Power donated $1,500 to the Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort during a small ceremony Tuesday at the Central Valley community policing station.

The money will be used to help the Spokane area’s eight SCOPE groups address administrative needs, such as improving communication between the sheriff’s department and the community policing stations.

SCOPE CV already has earmarked some of the donation money to buy a new fax machine. Presidents from the remaining SCOPE stations, which include five more Valley stations and one each in Green Bluff and Espinola, will meet to decide how to best spend the remainder of WWP’s gift.

The donation is WWP’s way of recognizing the need for citizen involvement in crime prevention, Rick Vermeers, a WWP transmission contracts agent, said when presenting the check.

“It’s probably one of the key points in protecting our neighborhoods,” Vermeers said.

Vermeers, who also is cochairperson of SCOPE CV, said the donation is part of a WWP program that helps fund employee community-interest activities. Four WWP members are SCOPE volunteers, Vermeers said.

“I’m thrilled that Washington Water Power has recognized that need for commitment to community,” said sheriff’s Inspector Mike Myhre. “We’re happy to have them on board.”
