HEISMAN WATCH

Danny Wuerrfel, QB, Florida ,was 11 of 34 for 290 yards with two interceptions, his worst performance since his freshman year.

Trophy trivia: Four of the five quarterbacks to win the Heisman in the past 10 years played for a team from the deep South.

Troy Davis, RB, Iowa State, gained 138 yards against Nebraska, leaving him 40 yards shy of 2,000 yards.

Trophy trivia: No player on a losing team has won the Heisman since Paul Hornung did so in 1956.

Orlando Pace, OL, Ohio State, can a lineman sustain the publicity necessary to win the Heisman? Trophy trivia: John Hicks of Ohio State finished second in 1972 - the best finish for an interior lineman.

Byron Hanspard, RB, Texas Tech, became the sixth major-college player to run for 2,000 yards in a season, rushing for 257 yards and four touchdowns in the Red Raiders’ 56-21 victory over Southwestern Louisiana.

Trophy trivia: All but one of the previous 2,000-yard rushers won the Heisman.

NOTABLE

Peyton Manning, Tennessee, hobbled by a sprained knee suffered in the first quarter, completed 28-of-41 passes for 282 yards and three TDs against Arkansas.

Robert Holcombe, Illinois, rushed for 315 yards in a loss to Minnesota.

Corey Dillon, Washington, set an NCAA rushing record for a quarter with 222 yards against San Jose State.

Jon Denton, UNLV, was 27 of 53 with four touchdown passes against San Diego State. He set NCAA freshman single-game records with 503 passing yards, 513 yards total offense and freshman season records for passing yards (3,154) and total offense (3,208).

Marcus Harris, Wyoming, caught 16 passes for 191 yards and reached 4,400 receiving yards, breaking the mark of 4,357 set in 1993 by Wyoming’s Ryan Yarborough.

Randy Moss, Marshall, broke Jerry Rice’s I-AA record for consecutive games (11) with a touchdown reception in leading the Thundering Herd to a 42-17 win over Furman. Notre Dame had 332 yards rushing, 233 passing and 350 in returns accounting for 915 yards against Pitt.

Vanderbilt was held to minus-29 yards on 23 rushes, and finished with 91 total yards and eight first downs in the Commodores’ 25-0 loss to Kentucky.

Howard’s 49-0 win over Morgan State was marred by 234 yards in penalties. Fifteen of the infractions were against Howard, including an unusual unsportsmanlike conduct call on the Bison marching band for playing too loud while the Bears had the ball.

If Ohio State and Arizona State win next week, their Rose Bowl will mark the bowl’s first pairing of undefeated teams since Alabama met Washington State in 1931.

QUOTABLE

“You don’t just go up to Lou Holtz and ask him something like that.”

- Notre Dame’s Allen Rossum on whether he or his teammates have been told what their coach’s future plans are. Rossum had two punt returns for touchdowns against Pitt.
