Back Wages Recovered For Garment Workers

Compiled From Wire Services

Back wages totaling $786,264 were recovered for 2,208 underpaid garment workers from June through September as part of the government’s campaign against sweatshops, the Labor Department said Friday.

Labor Secretary Robert Reich said the department conducted 194 investigations during the four-month period and found 118 violations of wage and hour laws. In addition to collecting the back wages, the department imposed $108,485 in civil penalties.
