Most Valley Schools Will Be Returning To Normal Monday

Central Valley School District is, cross your fingers, ready to open its school doors on Monday.

If the weather cooperates, that is.

The last school building to get power back was University High School - Friday at 6:30 a.m.

“As of Friday, all our schools have power and are ready for operation,” Superintendent Wally Stanley wrote in a letter mailed to parents.

East Valley’s prospects were less certain. East Farms Elementary and Mountain View Middle School were still without power at midday Friday. Trent Elementary had power lines down across its main entrance. East Valley officials weren’t ready Friday to predict an opening date. They planned a Sunday afternoon meeting to decide whether schools will open Monday.

East Valley also lacked telephone service in its bus facility. And power lines, trees and power poles were still down on Friday in some parts of the district.

West Valley School District had power at all schools on Friday, but no heat in Orchard Center Elementary. Superintendent Dave Smith said he expected, weather allowing, to open all schools on Monday, except Orchard Center. Elementary schools will send students home early for parent-teacher conferences on Monday. Even without heat, Orchard Center conferences are to run Monday, Smith said.

Arrangements will be made with the Red Cross so that the shelters operating at Seth Woodard and Millwood schools will not interfere with school operations, Smith said.

Central Valley officials announced that, short of new weather problems, all buses, including after-school activities buses, would run on their regular schedules Monday.

Central Valley also has rescheduled parent-teacher conferences, and its six-day pilot of the four-period day at Central Valley and University high schools.

Parent-teacher conferences will be held Monday through Wednesday, and Dec. 4-6. No conferences are set for Dec. 2 and 3.

The conferences originally were to start last Wednesday and continue this week. Conferences originally scheduled for the first day of that period, will simply be adjusted to the same time, on the first day of the new conference schedule.

Conference days will be early-release days, as usual. School on Dec. 2 and 3 will run on the regular schedule, however.

The four-period pilot at the high schools has been scheduled to start Monday and run through Dec. 4. (The district letter to parents contains an error on this date: Dec. 4 is correct.)

Any parents who had appointments to observe classes during the pilot period will be contacted by school officials. Those appointments will be rescheduled for Dec. 2 and 3.

Junior high and high school athletics will be back on their normal schedules. Any adjustments in game schedules will be made at a later date.
